1999 civic speedometer problems

Hi, new to the sight. Thursday morning on my way to work speedo quit check engine light came on. After work checked fuses seemed ok. checked speed sensor wires looked good. This morning on my way to work lights kept getting dimmer, then srs light came on vehicle died. After work it started drove home if I tried light it would start to die. Removed alternator had tested it's ok battery is one year old. What do I need to check?

You got codes? What codes does it have?

Check fuse #15 in the dash fusebox.

Yes fuse 15 is good and no did not check any codes. Just believed since it was dragging battery down alternator was bad I'm old school. Would bad speed sensor pull battery down.

I'd check codes just to see what possible helpful info I could gain. Maybe it's all related, maybe not.

Next I'd grab a wire diagram and voltmeter and do some real testing....I'd hate to replace perfectly good parts.

Would bad speed sensor pull battery down.
I suppose yes if the fuse is blown, since it feeds both of those items plus several other sensors: Alt, VSS, ELD, EVAP controls solenoids, both O2 sensors......(again, check for codes, could be a wiring problem or something if it ate through a wire).

See this bulletin link: http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/misc/...%2315_fuse.pdf

But a plain old sensor failure also damaging the alternator? No, I can't see it.

I'm old school.
I can be old school too (grew up with points and carbs, and fuel injection was just a passing fad LOL).....but I must be able to grasp all of the modern tech and really figure stuff out in order to get paid and keep my customers.

Ok I will install alternator tomorrow. Then will run it to advance to have them read code. Still something is taking charge out of battery. I would think alternator could keep up.

In the alternator 4 wire plug: Test the blk/yel wire for 12v+ with the key on.
If that tests as 0v, that's why it wouldn't charge.

Fuse 15 in the dash fusebox is supposed to give that wire power, with the key in the run position.........

Ok so I put alternator back in. Checked fuse 15 this time it is blown. Not quite sure why now you can see it. It checked good when I used meter. I know it sounds weird. And yes I do know how to use a meter as a 25 year tech my life depends on it. So all lights cleared speedometer works. Sure it will come back things don't fix there selves.

Re: 1999 civic speedometer problems

Read the bulletin linked in my previous post.

That tells where to find the short and how to fix it.

Sorry I missed it. But ezone that was the problem. Thanks for your time. It only cost me a little time. 99 civic work car with 170000 plus miles is back. Thanks.
