check engine light P0505
check engine light P0505
ok so my check engine light came on, my idle was extremely high between 1500-2000 rpms, it jst kept reving up and down .
went to a local shop, the code came up as idle air control valve , i did not change it with them. I went to a friend of mine which is a mechanic, he changed my idle air conrol valve which i bout from autozone. so it did not resolve the issue, he reset the light and i test drove it the check engine light was still on and the idle was still the same. So i drove it for about a week and thought that the part could be defective, went back to autozone and exchange it and got another idle air control valve. took it off cleaned out the throttle body and put the new one on again. Still the idle is still high reset the light, drove it nd the check engine light came right back on. The code this time came up as idle air control system. so i took it to another mechanic he swapped out the entire throttle body and readjusted the idle screw, and now that fixed the idle situation, the car no longer idles, but the check engine light is still on, so he recommended that i should change the computer ecu.
does anybody have any other ideas ?
my car is a 1999 honda civic ex 2 door coupe.

Re: check engine light
3rd mechanic did not erase codes?
Read the codes, then erase the codes.
Drive it, see what codes return.

Re: check engine light
What is the code, the actual Pxxxx format code number?
What car do you have: Year, model, trim , engine, body style?

Re: check engine light
1999 honda civic ex ,1.6 non vtech 2 door, the code was p0505
What RPM does it idle at now? ( As seen on a real tach or scanner, not the tach on the dash)
Maybe it's a wee bit too high or low and that big idle air screw needs tweaked some more.
Also, is the IAC getting hot with good coolant flow as the engine warms up?
Moving thread to appropriate 6th gen section in a few....

Re: check engine light
P0505 simply means the computer isn't able to control the RPM to its liking, RPM is over target by 200+ RPM, or under target by 100+ RPM--- for at least 20 seconds.

Re: check engine light P0505
Idle spec is probably around 700 RPM (look on your underhood emissions sticker for the actual spec for your car), your 900 is probably still too high.

Re: check engine light P0505
Ok, I found some US idle RPM specs (@ operating temperature)
D16Y8 M/T spec 670 +/- 50
D16Y8 A/T spec 700 +/- 50 (in P or N)
There's different steps for setup and adjustment depending on trans type. You may need a service manual.
Also, you should use a real tach or scanner data. Don't rely on the dashboard tach, they are not always accurate.
