Huge mistake please help

Hey all, i made a giant noob mistake today. When i was trying to repair an over torqued bolt on my valve cover today the bit i was using to extract the broken end of the bolt fell into a hole and deep down into the engine. it is a larger hole right beside the passenger side rear valve cover bolt point. I have this horrible feeling that it fell down into the crank shaft but i dont know for sure. Is there any way for me to do this without taking the whole engine apart? and is there any chance it could have fallen strait down and into the oil pan? any help would be great thank you so much.

The car is a 2000 Canadian Si (USA Ex model)
D16y8 - engine

Re: Huge mistake please help

You could try using a long stick with a magnet at the end of it...

I had thought of that too my problem is that i am concerned that one of 2 things may happen, 1. i lose the magnet in the struggle, 2. the stick gets lodged with a whole new world of problems. however i have definitely thought about the good ole stick n magnet route and may have to try it. thank you for the reply i appreciate your time.

Just a question, would it be possible that the bit could have fallen thru to the oil pan? because i have to replace the seal on it anyway and if it is possibly down there i might as well just do it. any thoughts are welcome thank you all again

I'd guess "probably"...and if it didn't, it should have. LOL

I honestly can't tell you if your particular issue would fall all the way to the bottom of the pan or get hung up on the main bearing web.

IF you have to pull the oil pan off anyway, then by all means do so and figure out where it went.

I'd leave the valve cover off...... Maybe if you need to see where the hole ends up you can straighten out a coat hanger and stuff it down the hole so you can see where it comes out below.

The factory doesn't put that stuff on either. Has it EVER been apart before? I kinda doubt it.

Re: Huge mistake please help

I figured it had because of the guy i bought it off of being an avid honda enthusiast but i was sure mistaken. As for myself this is my first honda, I was a ford guy till i got my explorer and found out it had 4 damn timing chains that are now on the fritz making a hell of a noise. My friend talked me into buying my first honda, overall i am quite happy with it. Wonderfully easy to work on compared to my fords. Unfortunately i have no access to any air tools or a torch because i just so happened to be doing this parked on the street... hopefully tomorrow i will be able to get the stuff off and get the pan off, find the stupid bit, put a new seal and be on my freaking way lol.

Thank you for making me feel welcome on the forum and i will try to return the favor to another.

Re: Huge mistake please help

Holy cap success. The bit was stuck in some random oil return trap type thing. So happy it's done lol. Kicker is that if had shovedthe magnet thing deeper I would have got it, little passed about that but live and learn. Thanks again for all the help people.
