What caused a catastrophic failure of my # 4 piston, D16y8 engine.
I was driving back home doing around 70 when i had a total loss of power. There are no Mods done to the engine, was a daily driver. Had recently done the oil pan gasket. No signs of wear or metal at that time. After pulling over oil was everywhere. Finally had a chance to get the car on jacks and saw a big crack in the oil pan. Pulled the pan and found a complete failure of the #4 piston and the its parts in the pan. What caused this. I did buy the car used and it did have 200000 miles on it.

your rod is not at the crankshaft... potential culprit?
if you want to disassemble to see, feel free. but i would recommend a "new" engine...

That rod wanted out, really badly.
Time for another engine.

I am going to take it out and tear it down. but do you think I just need a new block or would i need to get the whole package head, block, pan. now what caused the rod to fail. Also i did have some oil seepage into the coolant but none into the oil pan.

Pull it out, but don't even bother tearing it down unless you just want to see inside it. It's a boat anchor. An expensive paperweight. Block is junk.
You need an engine. Complete, used, low mileage, will be the cheap way to go. You can probably find one for $500 or less, easily.

The main bearing girdle (or called a bridge) that broke is an integral part of THAT engine block. You can't just go get one from another engine and have it work, it is machined during production to be a matched component of that engine ONLY, no other.
