'96 Civic Coupe auto tranny problem. HELP!
'96 Civic Coupe auto tranny problem. HELP!
Okay, I'm new but I did post in the intro section. I just got this '96 Civic for my girlfriend and I'm already having problems. It does have over 200,000 on the clock but the engine was rebuilt and has about 80,000 on it and the PO had loads of maintenance receipts with the car. First I had to replace the master cylinder but that went well. Now I'm having a tranny problem.
She drove the car about 70 miles today and it was just fine. Then this evening she went out to change it's position in the drive way and it won't shift out of D4. The gear selector moves smoothly and the gear indicator lights change position but no matter which position you put it in it still drives. It does not reverse.
Gear shift cable maybe?
Help me out, I need to get this thing back on the road.

the cable could broke loose from the shifter this could happen also you said the engine was rebuild, so they musta yank out the engine. located where the shifter cable or rod that is connected to the tranny and shift to see if theres any play if somthing is loose try to tighten it up.
Re: '96 Civic Coupe auto tranny problem. HELP!
Thanks for the reply! I went out this morning and removed the center console because I was thinking the same thing. The cable is still connected to the shifter though. I guess the next step is to raise the car up and take a see if it broke loose from the tranny?

Fixed! Took the cover off the tranny and the bolt that should have been holding the shift cable to the control shaft fell out on my face. It was not the correct bolt, looked like it was way too short and maybe had been broken at some point. It probably just vibrated out. The cable was all good but it was just rotating on the control shaft instead of moving it.
I bought an M6 bolt that was long enough to pass all the way through the shaft and collar and put it in with some lock-tite on it. Car is good to go now.
Thanks for the help!
