My Current Nightmare
Okay, so yesterday as Im cruising down the freeway going about 75 mph in 5th gear, my car suddenly shut off. I immediately pulled over and smelled and burning rubber smell. Popped the hood, and found shreds of the timing belt scattered across the bay.
Got it to my local shop to find out my worst nightmare came true. A few bent valves. They said the pistons were fine though. They said what they will do is replace the valves, timing belt, & water pump at an estimated cost of $1800.
Price wise, would it make more since to have the head rebuilt like they suggested, or just buy a used head for $300-$400 and have them replace it along with the timing belt and water pump?
Which involves more labor?
By the way the engine is a b16a2

Re: My Current Nightmare
Replacing a few valves isn't too difficult or time consuming. It's also not considered a rebuild IMO.
The majority of labor will come from removing/reinstalling the head.
I'd just tell them to replace the valves. Junkyard heads are hit or miss, you don't know what they've been through.
