CA State Ref. Smog Question
CA State Ref. Smog Question
Hey there,
I've got a state ref ticket for my 99 Civic Si, and I'm currently in the process of changing everything to smog legal. But I can't figure out whether or not this MSD ignition would fail the visual test.
It's the item in the link below:

Here is a pic the said ignition on the engine.

Thanks in advance!

Re: CA State Ref. Smog Question
I don't live in Cali so, I don't know 100% but, I seriously doubt they care about that. Improved ignition just makes the car run better, hence it would be better able to meet emissions standards. Now, if they don't see an OEM exhaust manifold or catalytic converter it's an automatic fail.

Re: CA State Ref. Smog Question
cali is tricky, they will not even allow a "good" intake to pass (with all the hoses and filters hooked up like stock) if it doesnt have a carb sticker. in cali, assume its illegal unless it has a carb sticker or documentation. every obvious aftermarket part like intake, header, exhaust, etc has to be carb exempt.

Re: CA State Ref. Smog Question
you should check with msd, because they seem to care about carb standards.

Re: CA State Ref. Smog Question
Thank you for the replies.
I did check the MSD website before and tried to look for the CARB EO number on the ignition itself, but came up with nothing. MSD's customer service line is open again on the coming Monday, so I guess I will try to give them a call.
California is a great place to live. For tuned cars, not so much.

Re: CA State Ref. Smog Question
Just called MSD to see if it would pass the state ref visual test, and they said this: "We have no idea."
I guess I'll just have to bring it to the state ref and hope it passes!
