Heater hose advice

I want to replace my heater bypass hose (#3 on the image) and the heater outlet hose (not shown). They both attach to the left side of the thermostat housing. I examined them and they both feel "crunchy" so I'm guessing it's time to replace them. Other than driving way out of my way to get dealer parts, I'd like to use "universal" hose that I can cut/shape myself. The retail parts place like Autozone just don't carry exact replacements, but they have long-length hose (Thermoid brand). Is this Ok to do or should I just make the trip to the dealer?

Re: Heater hose advice

Also, how do I know what diameter hose will fit without removing the existing hoses?

Re: Heater hose advice

you will need to remove the old ones to get a sample or at least cut a piece out. im not sure off hand of the sizes. and yes bulk auto store hose is fine so long as you get the right kind. make sure it is rated for use with coolant. some hose is for fuel injection, trans fluid, air, or coolant. read very carefully.

I've had bad experience(s) (yes..plural) with AutoZone tubing. It's not necessarily the quality of the tube itself, its just trying to get that proper fitment. I've always gone to the dealership just for the sake of peace of mind. I've had parts departments ship the parts directly to my house before and I didn't have to leave the house. Just my .02.
