Weird noise when accelerating in low gears

Sorry- I'm a big rookie when it comes to car repairs, but I'm hoping someone on here can help...

I have a 99 civic hatchback. Around 280KMs. We recently replaced the brake pads and shoes and since then it's been on and off making a weird noise when I accelerate. I notice it most right after I switch to 2nd and 3rd gear, just when I'm starting to speed up. It's a weird grinding/rubbing/vibrating type sound. Not that loud but noticable. It goes away after a couple seconds, once I speed up. I'm not sure if this has to do with the brake job, or if it's totally unrelated. The noise seems to be coming from the front, somewhere, although that doesn't really narrow it down.

I don't trust my mechanic not to just charge what they think I'll pay even if it's a small job. I'm hoping to fix it myself if possible or at least narrow it down. *sigh*. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!!
