Check engine light on & a timing belt cover growl?
Check engine light on & a timing belt cover growl?
Hey everyone. My check engine light just came on my 00 EX and there is what I would describe as a weird medium pitched growling sound coming from the upper timing belt cover. It's kind of like dry gears rotating against each other, (think of a bad ball bearing rotating). The whole timing belt replacement procedure was done by a shop at 80K however and these symptoms just happened the other day. I did a complete tune up a week ago too, but have driven it 500 miles since without problem. Car has 92400K on it now, I took off the belts to see if the accessory pulleys were the problem but nope. The car hasn't experienced any loss of power and idle speed is okay. Any idea what can it be?

Did you have the code(s) pulled? I hope this doesn't come off as dickish, but if you have a CEL, you should pull the code(s) and post them here. No point in saying you have a check engine light but not giving us what it says. It helps with diagnosis.

Likely to be a timing issue, I would think that is the problem, either during the job after the belt was done or during. Are you hearing any pining or ticking sound during acceleration because it could just be off. If the problem persists in the coming days I would recommend you take the car back to the shop who did the work and make sure everything is in line. Best of luck!

Just be careful because it could be the tensioner... I wouldn't drive the car until you find out whats going on. It could be as simple as removing the timing belt cover and inspecting.
