one key for door/trunk/ignition

'99 Civic EX Coupe

I have two problems really:

1. The driver door will only lock manually. I have to pull the interior door handle to the open position and then lock the door.

2. This is a new to me car so I don't know what the standard setup is but I have a FOB and two keys, one (key) for the door/trunk and one for the ignition. I would like to only have one key for everything.

Where do I start? I would like to do this myself if possible.

Thanks!

Re: one key for door/trunk/ignition

1. That's normal, I've been doing it for 20 years. Technically it's not supposed to lock from the inside with the door open but, that is the cheat. Otherwise you have to lock it from the outside. I would highly suggest a spare key for the wallet if you plan on locking it that way. I speak from experience. lol

2. Pull the locks and take them to the locksmith to be re-keyed to the ignition key. If you take the locks to them it'll be about $10-20 per lock. If you want them to do all the work your looking at least twice as much money.

Thanks!

So what part is worn out if the FOB will no longer lock/unlock the door? It works fine on the pax side just not the driver...

Tumblers in the lock are worn. Replace and re-key.

Re: one key for door/trunk/ignition

Acuras/ Hondas come with one key for doors (trunk where applicable) and ignition as standard. Your ignition key/cylinder was changed. The car might have been previously stolen (smashed ign switch key cylinder) or could have had the complete ignition switch assembly changed as there was a honda notice for defective ign. switches for 96-2K Civics. That could be why you have 2 keys. It might be easier to remove the ignition cylinder and take it to the locksmith to have it keyed to the doors instead of having to remove the door lock cylinders as well as the trunk lock cylinder.

Your driver's door lock actuator motor is probably seized/rusted and that is why it is the only one not working. This happens quite a bit on Hondas/Acuras. I just did a TSX Driver's side DLA this afternoon. Replacing it on the 96-2K Civics is a bit easier than the TSX as the entire door lock mechanism does not have to be removed. You can get a used one from a recycler or a new one on line 50-70 I think. The motors in the DLA's can be replaced but for most people, it is easy to just get a replacement.

Re: one key for door/trunk/ignition

^^ He makes a good point. Why remove and re-key 5 locks when you can do 1? I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking. I forgot that you don't have an immobilizer.

Re: one key for door/trunk/ignition

Sorry, I forgot to mention it was stolen not too long ago...I have two smaller door/trunk keys, one medium sized ignition key and two FOBs.

This is a general question: should I buy OEM parts if available and competitively priced?

Thanks again!
