Fuel gauge issue?
My daughter's 98 EX has a fuel gauge problem. It will read normal sometime and then show past full most of the time. Because of Honda's easy access to the sending unit I replaced it. Problem still the same.
Any suggestions?

Re: Fuel gauge issue?
could be a faulty fuel gauge in the cluster. may want to check ebay and try a replacement. usually fuel senders going bad only affect the reading within the defined parameters of the gauge (meaning, it will not cause the gauge to go above its range of motion).
Re: Fuel gauge issue?
OK, I wish I would have found this forum before I dropped $100.00 on a new sending unit. Are these gauge clusters known to have issues? This will be the second one. I replaced one after the speedo was not reading correctly. Could it possibly be a ground issue?

Re: Fuel gauge issue?
its possible but then nothing in the cluster would work. if the gas is the only problem, id say bad gauge. they dont make em like they do now unfortunately. the newer civic clusters are much more advanced compared to the old stuff. if it has an analog odometer (not digital) chances are the unit will have issues. technology was just too limited back then.
Re: Fuel gauge issue?
Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm looking for another gauge cluster. I told
my daughter just to use her trip odometer, but she'd like it to work.
Any idea's where to purchase? I've tried local junk yard's no luck.
Thanks,again

I am having the same issue with my 1998 LX. Any suggestions?

Hey Gearbox or anyone that can help
Quick question, do you know if the fuel sending unit is in the trunk underneath the spare tire on a 2000 civic LX? I found what looks like it would be, i guess the previous owner or dealership put like tar or caulking over half of it!!!!!

Re: Fuel gauge issue?
if you have a difficult time finding the fuel and temp gauge units from the instrument cluster and don't want to spend big bucks at the dealership, the gauges can be repaired. Usually one of the thin copper wires wound on the coil around the needle breaks off at the cold soldered joint (there are 4 connections/terminals). Patience and a bit of careful soldering can reconnect the wire and the gauge reads fine again.
just did a 98 civic cluster that was reading "Full' and "Hot" all the time. The gauge has to be taken out of the cluster (3 screws) and the back metal cover removed to clearly see the copper wound coil and the wires if any are broken.

Re: Fuel gauge issue?
they do not sell individual parts of the cluster, only the whole thing. and with clusters selling for $100 or less on ebay, it seems easier to just replace the whole thing. just find one with similar mileage.
My honda civic dx 98 hath has a similar problem.. the gauge reads but only reads abouve 1/2 tank. I tested the sending unit with the voltmeter and it reads a full range (~4 to ~106 ohms) so, thinking it might be the gauge, hooked up the meter to the back of the fuel gauge on the instrument cluster. But when the sending unit reads ~106 ohms the wiring going into the back of the gauge reads ~43 ohms. I have no clue what could be causing it..
