Question 97 Civic Idle Problem! Gurus HELP!!!!!

Hey guys Im new to this site. I got my first Honda Civic yesterday and I got a good deal on it. Its just a DX 1.6 V-tec. All I needed to do to it was buy a battery and a caliper for it. All is good except for something to do with the idle. Like I said I got it yesterday and today when I started it, it would idle right and then jump to 2000 rpms and then down. 20 seconds later it would do it again. After it warms up it seems to be doing a lil better. Sometimes even being warm instead of idle jumping up, it drops a lil bt and then back up. What could this be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The problem is likely your idle air control valve, over time it can get dirty and cause problems with maintaining idle. All you need to do is remove it and clean it out and that should solve your problem.

I will try that. I also did a little bit of reading and I did replace my battery. disconnecting the battery resets ecu correct? If thats the case Im hoping it only did that cause it was the first start after disconnecting it. It should relearn how to idle correctly I hope.

It will relearn the idle on its own its not like some of the newer cars that have an idle learning process.

Its most likly the IAC valve. I literally had the same problem as you and solved it 15 min ago. Remove the iac and spray it with TB cleaner.

I will clean it tomorrow first thing in the morning and then take her for a ride. I dont think its a vaccum leak has to be a dirty iac. Thanks for info tho, helps.

This Youtube vid shows you how to clean it. You can remove the iacv from the TB or you can remove the TB altogether to get at it. I had to remove the whole TB afterwards because I couldnt get the iac gasket to stick vertically. You my have to replace the TB gasket if you chose that route.
