What's the chirping/squeaking sound?

At 40mph and above there's a squeak from the engine area. It does alter with a/c on or off, or as speed goes up or down, or during turns. i might be able to rule out belts, but not sure. i've read about a chirp being cured by a valve adjustment. ideas???

Re: What's the chirping/squeaking sound?

Valves are more of a clatter than a squeak, it sounds like you need new belts.

If the sound changes when you turn on the ac it's the ac belt, when you turn it's the ps belt, if it changes based on speed then it's the timing belt/tensioner. You can spray belt dressing on the belts one at a time to see which one needs to be changed, but it sounds like they're all gone. It should be around a $500 fix and it should be addressed asap.

Re: What's the chirping/squeaking sound?

Possibly a belt tensioner going ... and the only one our cars has is a Timing belt tensioner. Check your belts. Now you say it goes up and down with speed, is it speed or RPMs though?

^Missed the tensioner part in Bombers post! FTL!

Sorry, I meant to say doesn't change. It's random, but only at 35-40mph and higher.

It may sound random, but based on your original post it's almost definitely belts.

Get it checked out soon, if one snaps your engine is toast.

That must have been the remains of your conscious dying an agonizing death. Hope you both enjoyed Henry Rollins. Happy V-Day.
