5-sp trans. replace on 99' EX - Help...
Can anyone please help me with any kind of info. on changing my d16y8 5-speed manual transmission?
Any links to threads with good info, or DIYs would really be nice. Also, any input on what other transmissions might fit on the car could be useful, as long as you include any specifics I'd need to look out for.
Any ballpark figures of what a shop might charge me to do the swap if I brought them the car with the replacement trans?
I plan on buying something used, whether from CraigsList, a junkyard, or scouring the forums on sites like this - I've had success getting parts and know-how for my RSX on similar forums. I took a shot and made a post on CL a few weeks ago and got 4-5 hits with an average price range of about $200, so I figure that's the most I'll have to spend, and I'm hoping to score something for about half that, if I can negotiate
If it doesn't sound all that complicated, or the cost is unreasonable to have it swapped at a shop, then I was contemplating trying to change it myself.
I'm not really mechanically inclined, but I don't mind learning, and trust myself over the scum I've encountered in the past. My brother and father are also pretty competent, though I can't guarantee I'll get all that much help from them....
In any case, ANY and ALL advice on anything from potential trouble areas, tools necessary, how to tell if a used trans. is any good, where the best place to buy one might be, whether it's worth having it done by a shop, or attempting to do it myself, etc., etc., IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
FWIW - I'm pretty sure that the synchros are bad because the last time I drove it, I couldn't even get into 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, gear. And before that, there was a good bit of 3rd gear grinds and 4th gear pop-outs, since the time I bought it. A few months later, I couldn't get into the other gears at all, managed to get it to my brother's house going from 1st to 5th, literally, and it's been sitting there since - which has been about 6-8 months now.
Everything else was in such good shape, and I'd hate to see it deteriorate. I don't know what I plan to do with the car, but I just can't imagine trying to sell it with a bad transmission. I'd rather take a shot at fixing the car and keep it, sell it, or just give it to someone that will take care of it.
