Clutch or Transmission?
Clutch or Transmission?
Hey Guys,
Having a bit of a problem with my 97 honda civic (LX I believe) 5 speed. I'll warn you that I am not a mechanic at all, so bear with me.
About 2 months ago, I noticed a grinding sound when my car idles, which turned out to be the throw out bearing on the clutch. We replaced the clutch, but the car kept making the same noise.
Last week, we made a trip home (280 mi). At some point, the car then started making this weird scraping noise, as if something was not oiled right or was wrapped up in the tires (like a tumble weed or something). This noise persisted, but I noticed it only did this in gears 2-5, and only occured when I pushed the accelerator.
On our way back home the next day, I could notice that my gear shifter was rattling around more than usual. We stopped to get gas, but this is where another problem occured. Gears one and two seemed ok, but in third gear, it would start to grind. 4th gear didn't take at all. It kept rejecting 4th gear all together with the grinding. I had to go from 2nd to 5th.
Once back on the highway, 5th gear did ok for the most part, but every so often, it would throw itself out of gear. I noticed that when I pressed the gas, the shifter would jolt back towards the neutral gear, but once I let off, it would move forward towards the 5th gear.
I guess I am hoping that this is the clutch, rather than the transmission. My thinks it might be the transmission, but still hasn't ruled out the clutch completely, but this is one of those things that he said he would have to see to make a better diagnosis. We are working on getting my car back to town to get it checked out, but just wondering if anyone had any input on the mean time.
For some reason, I have a strange feeling that the clutch is the problem, but I am not mech savvy.
Thanks. Just ask if any other info is needed.

Re: Clutch or Transmission?
Or your shift linkage isnt connected at the tranny or the shifter, or if it is connected, it has issues like a busted bushing, or broken mounting point... look on your tranny where the cables connect and on the physical shifter itself.
Re: Clutch or Transmission?
i think your linkage would be ok. if one side went bad you would only have 1st, 3rd, and 5th and the other one would be 2nd, 4th, and reverse. sounds to me that you have a busted or bent shft fork in your tranny or some synchros that are severely worn, or a nasty combination of both. i had a jeep do the grinding stuff that your talkin about and it was a synchro but the jumping out of gear, that is classic shift fork damage. i would say either way that the damage is in the tranny. manual transmissions are pretty simple and with the help of a book and a clean working environment, most diy'ers could rebuild the transmission with new parts and seals in a day or two.
Re: Clutch or Transmission?
No way it's your clutch. If you're grinding in any gear, a transmission syncro is bad. If you're hopping out or can't get in gear, you're probably looking at syncros and blocker gears.

Re: Clutch or Transmission?
Need HELP!!! I have had my 92 Honda Civic clutch replaced because the car would not go into gear. We thought the problem was resolved till we drove it about two blocks from home and the car would not go into gear again. The mechanic showed me the clutch fork and said it appeared worn last time the clutched was replaced it wasn't lubed correctly. So we had him replace the clutch fork. Thought all was good till we drove it around the block same issue. Clutch fork popped off and the clutch can be pushed but the car wont go into gear. Someone advised we needed new trany and so we spent money on new transmission. Drove the car a mile and then on the way home, same issue clutch for came off again and the car wont go into gear. Any advise would be welcome. I've invested so much on this issue and both the mechanic and I are at a loss of how to resolve this issue. Please HELP!!! Do I part out the new clutch, fork, and transmission or it is just something small we are missing. Thanks
Sally
I should mention the clutch release/fork has been replaced and the previous one was not cracked or bent.
