2000 Civic Si DOHC engine rebuild help

My son has a 2000Si w/61K miles. He is off to college and I took the car out for a drive when I head a knocking. As it turns out,my mechanic who I have been going to for yrs. said I blew a piston and we will need to pull the engine, have a machine shop bore new holes and recondition connecting rods. I know little about cars but I am being quoted the following: 25 hrs. labor to remove and install engine at $88/per hr. and $840 for complete motor machining. Does this sound about right for anyone who either had this done before or familiar with the process. My son comes home in about a month so that's my goal to have it back running. Thanks all, I really appreciate your time and replies.

If you can find friends that have either the tools or know-how to remove/reinstall the engine, you can save yourself a lot of money. You can rent a cherry picker for relatively cheap, then bring the engine into the shop and get them to do the internal engine work.

Rebuilding a motor is alot of work. First off did he take the motor apart to look at it. If not then it might be as bad to where you have to bore it. You might just need to hone it. It all just depends on what it looks like. Sometimes they can come out alright but sometimes they can be really bad. I just got done rebuilding a d16z6 and it is alot of work, time and money for the person.

That seems like a fair price. It is alot of work to do that job.

That sort of thing should not happen to a engine with 61k on it. I would want to know what caused it also. Maybee a drop in oil pressure or overheating. Ask the mechanic what caused it.
