98 EX shifter problems

Ok so this car is a fixer uper fer sure. Any way here's a problem I can't figure out.
When I got the car the shifter was so loose I could barely find the gears. So I replaced the bushings underneath (front and rear) with energy susp ones and it tightened it up considerably. HOWEVER it is still really loose and wobbles a lot side to side even when in gear.. Also it tends to not catch in 4th sometimes, I have to baby it into gear. So I don't know what else to check at this point and everywhere I look on the internet says to replace bushings, which I already did!
Any help would be cool.

I am not to sure but dont the 6th gen civics have the double or single bend shifter rods instead of the new shifter cables. If it is the shifter rod then I would check that out.

Re: 98 EX shifter problems

Take the boot off and see if it's loose only at the shifter (#2) or if #13 is loose and at least it narrows it down. If #13 is loose, try changing the rubber holders (#16, 14, 30).

EDIT: Only place I've been able to get those parts with no number listed is at the local Honda house. Usually small parts like that aren't too awful expensive at the dealer.

Re: 98 EX shifter problems

Might be 4th gear synchro. If that's the case then you might as well rebuild it as they have to take the whole thing practically apart anyways. I'll ask my friend who runs the tranny shop tomorrow and get back to ya.

i had the same problem, its the bearings in your shifter. for mine i had to get a new shifter, fixed everything. there are bearings in your shifter that connect your linkage to the bottom of your shifter!
