Timing Belt on 1998 Civic

Hello all,
Nice to join you people.

I have a 1998 Honda Civic whose VIN starts with 2 saying it to be Canada assembled car. In the manual, it says that for US civic timing belt is due at every 60,000 k miles and for Canada Civic at every 105 k miles.

Now I am not sure whether my Civic will be considered US civic (since it is located here) or Canada Civic (as VIN starts with 2), since I have to replace timing belt I do not know whether to wait till 120 K, considering it to be US civic (since I have 108k on it right now and do not if previous fellow did timing belt on it or not) or replace it now, considering it as Canada Civic.

Thanks

Your car is a US civic made in canada. You follow US guidelines on the civic I wouldnt wait much more then 110k before u change it. Get ready to change it withing the next 2k miles or so.

Re: Timing Belt on 1998 Civic

The difference is not the car, or where it is built. The difference is miles and kilometers. I am sure if you go back and look, it says 105000 Kilometers, not 105000 miles. That is prolly about correct for the conversion, 60000 miles to 105 kilometers...just a sec....a Kilometer is .62 miles as I remember. The conversion works out that 60000 miles is around 98000 kilometers...so that is pretty close.

They really recommend the change at 60k? I was kinda confused when I first read the OP post. I thought it was 110k miles

I don't really know for sure...my car didn't come with an owner's manual. I am just going off the info he posted...

Re: Timing Belt on 1998 Civic

Thanks all for replying and sorry for any confusion I caused.

ROb is right, its 100 K kms (distance units in Canada) and 60 K miles in US in manual. I should have looked it carefully. So, I think it is the right time to get it changed.

Regarding the timing belt replacement time, manual says 60K if the car is driven regularly under -20 C or above 43 C temp. conditions but does not mention the replacement time under normal driving conditions. Various posts says it to be around 100 K or seven years (which so ever is earlier).

Thanks again.

Its 110k miles or 7 years whichever comes first. Make sure water pump and tensioner gets changed as well, might as well do your drive belts too if its been awhile and they will be off.
