Wiper Problem - 1998 LX Sedan

I'm new to the forum and looking for some DIY help. My '98 LX (185000 miles and going as strong as the day I bought it) has recently developed an issue where the wiper arms don't start and stop in the same place every time. The motor seems strong, and there isn't any arm looseness. Every speed, including intermittent, works okay. Even though they will start and stop in random positions, the L and R arms always do it equally. Sometimes they get in the mode of slamming too hard in the "down" position while not coming across the windshield far enough, and other times not far enough down and too far across. I could replace the motor, but I'm not convinced that's the problem. What do you think the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
