Xm Diy

Tools needed
Screwdriver
Ratchet set
Exacto Knife
Panel Popper
Various Zip Ties

Equipment Needed
XM ready Headunit
XM controller

XM antenna

Step 1:
Remove Headunit / Climate control pod, run cable from passenger foot area to area behind headunit. use T-tap to connect +12 volt on IP Bus cable to yellow wire in headunit harness
connect IP Bus cable to Headhunit and replace pod. connect other end to controller, connect antenna, and touch ground wire to vehicles body. turn on car and switch XM to channel zero and verify you can here the xm broadcast before installing everything else.

Step 2:
unhook controller and run IPBus cable to intended mouting location. i ran mine under the passenger door sill, behind the plastic "wall" and into the trunk.

Step 3:
Determine mounting location on roof for antenna, its really personal preference on this step

Step 4:
here comes the fun part, conceling the antenna wires. the antenna is split into two wires, one for terrestial reception and one for satellite reception. this makes it much easier to install. if you look under the gasket that surrounds the rear window, you can see theres space under it, just enough to stuff the wire under it. the best tools to do this is the exacto knife and panel popper. the knife is kind of a risk, i didnt have anything that thin that didnt have a sharp edge, so i used the dull end of the kife to pull the gasket back some enough so i could stick the wire in, then pushed the wire down the gasket length with the panel popper, it makes much more sense when you actually start doing it. just be patient with it, or youll be

Step 5:
How to get the wire into the trunk? the only way i could think is zip tie it to the trunk arms
i know this isnt the best way. I'm open on suggestions on other ways to do it.

Step 6:
once controller is mounted, i chose to mount it on the back of the 1/3 seat using zipties. (i've since then cleaned up the cables) Connect eveything and turn the car onto XM and tune to channel 0. If you've gotten this far and you can hear the XM broadcast, congrats! youve done the install correctly. copy down the radio ID thats displayed on your headunit and then logon to www.xmradio.com to activate your unit. once its activated, about 10 consecutive minutes of having your car tuned to XM, you'll be able to receive all 100 stations. until your activated, one station from each category is broadcasted.

Step 7:
sit back and enjoy XM

the antenna is barely noticalbe if your facing the front of your car

Good job man! Nice DIY. I just have one question though. Would it be possible to mount the antenna on say, the dash of your car, on the inside, so you don't have to worry about the wires, or some punk beating or theiving your antenna? Or does it specify in the instructions that it has to be on the outside of the car?

the directions say that for proper reception, it needs ~2 square feet of metal to be mounted onto, thats why they can make the antenna so small. if your worried about wires, theres a through the glass antenna, but i dont know how well that would work if you have tint on your windows. another member on this board mounted his on the rear deck, that might be an option
