hey i just had another inovative idea. instead me cuttin all those lil holes to mount the faceplate i have thought of a better way!.

what i am gonna do is get a metal hinge like this

and then screw both sides into the headliner (less holes and less sloppy)
and then just attach the face to the metal hinge via double sided tape. i just only hope that it will attach it strong enough for it to not move. what do you think? is that 3M tape really strong? could anyone recommend anything stronger?
you will still have holes. there is no way to get around that. Not that I know of.

now the problem with puttin the headunit there is that u have to extent the wiring harnesss for power. this wasnt too... hard.

now i am trying to figure out how to extent the cable for the antenna to reach down here.

*VERY IMPORTANT. if u plan on putting your headunit were mines is it will not just slide all back together, as i had hoped. there is a metal bracket in the way. it is on the LEFT side of E-BRAKE (*when sitting normally) and will not allow the headunit to slide all the way down. hence not leeting the plastic trim piece lock back into stock position. tommorow i will be cuttin away at some of the metal bracket just enought to make it fit.
another solution would be to raise the headunit up some. but taht would call for modifying the plastic trim. which i probably wont be able to do and make it "pretty". so i will just resort to cuttin away the metal bracket that no1 will ever see anyway.

thanx
Mike

What kind of brackets are those that you are using to secure the screen in there? Good job..a lot better then what I did when I put mine in my console...

As for the "plastic" that you are refering to, plexiglass all the way

those brackets came attached to the screen. they can be removed. what i did was cut two slits on the underside of the ac vents to slide the top of the brackets upward. and i just positioned the bottom right bracket so that the screw hole lined up with the hole that the Defrost controls screwed into. i screwed everything together and it holds pretty tightly.

a link to the screen is posted on page 6 of this thread i think. its pretty good for 100 bucks. i should buy 2 more for the headrest.

i like how yours looks

with a detatched face, it would be rediculously easy.

mine barely fits, i used 1/4 inch high quality ply as my base, and sanded it smooth, then cut holes in it. fit the trim ring on, then backfilled it with putty. then glassed over the whole thing with carbon. done.

if you put yoru whole radio in there, youll have to watch out for the e-brake mount, i guess i noticed it and forgot about it later, some others here have tried it and didnt notice till the test fitting. doh!

if you route just teh face there, piece o cake, and itll go right up agaisnt teh back, if you want.

yeah the ebrake mount had to be cut away for the bottom of the headunit to fit. i burned some of my carpet in the process of cutting it
my headunit is actually attached to the stock pocket thingy. since its basically the same width and lenght i took it apart. the pocket thingy becomes two halves. it just barely fits the headunit some cutting away at the plastic is required. and i just ghetto rigged and duct taped it to the half of the pocket that has the screw holes taht screw into the trimpeice u see (*painted blue in my pics). so once its securely taped onto the pocket thingy, the pocket thingy can then be screwed back into its stock place.

if u still dont cant picture how i did it. i would be happy to take it apart and take some nice pics for u.

*another con into doing this is that if u do not have 12 different color wire [like me] you would hav to run each wire individually untill u get all twelved connected on each end. i used all the same wire so i had no way in telling what wire goes to which pin on each end if i pulled all the wire through at once. this also disables me from ever disconnecting one of the ends to completely take the headunit out of my car. (unless of coarse i lable all 12 wires)

I'd like to try the same thing with my headunit, but I don't know if I can. I have a Panasonic CQDFX972U:

I haven't taken a very close look at the back of the HU though, so I don't know if I'd be able to do it the same way that you guys have. I'll keep you posted.

If I can't seperate the faceplate from the HU, I atleast want to relocate the whole thing down in the 12v socket place (above the cup-holders).

Oh yea...NICE JOB!!!

No, it's not motorized...thank goodness (Motorized=more parts to break)

It's removable, and to put it back in place you have to put the bottom left corner in first, push it in a little bit, and then slip in the bottom right side. Since I'm not familiar with the back of the face-plate, I'm not sure if the electrical current travels through the hinges on the bottom or though a "contact-point" like most face-plates. I'll let you know when I find out.

it should be generally the same setup. the faceplate should have a few metal pins or connections that touch the headuints matching set of pins when the faceplate is in the closed position.

now if headunit makers would make the faceplate communicate with the headunit wirelessly via infared or some kinda bluetooth tech.. relocation would be so easy, and it would open up so many doors for creative mounting
