porting an enclosure
uhh I guess so i don't know why you'd want to run them outside the enclosure,.. it sounds like it would be a lot more work. there's a formula to figure out how long a port should be.
I'm sure if you did a search you could find the formula.

that's the dumbest thing I ever heard... Do you know why you want super long ports? cuz they would "look cool" I hope not.. you better have a legitimate reason for wanting long ports.

Depends how long the port actually is..and if you can keep the part hidden that goes outside the box. then it's allright..but to have a fully visible port hanging out the box is jus not cool
well sure.. but from what he's saying that's not why he wants long ports
doesn't sound like tuning is that big of a deal to him.

form follows function. and once you have function, why not go all out in form? for awhile when i was still designng a stereo where i had sidepanels in my car, i was going to run the ports underneath those panels then have the ports fire directly at each other from either side of teh vehicle! (most people i know put 6x9's there....)
but once you hammer out a design, why not go for creativity? could cut a series of holes and route PVC liek a snake into and out of the box thought about doing that one

Man! you thought of that too?!? i've always thought about making the portsin and out of both sides, or around one side to the back or just around the side liek a big handle. enough of me.

hell why not make a small ported enclosure with a pair of 4" ports tuned down to 28hz and have them come out the sides of a plexi glass box and make them look like devil horns??

the reason i was asking, is that someone asked me to design them an enclosure similar to mine (spare tire box) but ported, and i figured, since my trunk floor is raised 3 or 4 inches due to the box, i have a bunch of space to work with under the floor... why not use it to run some ports that come up the side and then end up next to the subs... lemme see if i can draw a diagram...

thanks for all the support there JohnDoe
about super long ports there JohnDoe, i think it was the new diamond subs (feel free to correct me) that have some ludicrously long ports... not sure
but i hope you all see what im talking about now...

true..but woofers react differently in in different sized enclosures with different sized ports..
the same woofer in 1.1 cu.ft ported tuned to 28hz might sound alot different in a 3.2 cu.ft enclosure tuned to 28hz wth a 2" port
some woofers get better response in small low tuned enclosures..some ge better response in larger enclosures..

was in reference to "diamonds have long ports"....
furthermore, port legth and tuning is also related to port area. you tune to 35 Hz with a 2 inch port, its not so big. increase that to 6" and youve got quite a port!
sub performance doesnt really even enter into this yet. its a question purely of port design. which is dependant only on box properties.

yea the diamond subs require like a 54" port.....i looked at those, i seen a box design for them ported and for 2 12" it would take up most of the trunk, so if i get those i'll be sealing them up
