How to splice to wire sub?

I plan on keeping the stock headunit, so how do I get a signal to my sub? I searched and came up with the following:

1) Splice into the rear speakers and use speaker-level inputs
2) Use line convertor to change to RCA

I'm not exactly sure what I'm talking about, but can somebody clear this up?

speaker level inputs are inputs on the amp that you use..not all amps have these so to go this way you need a amp that has it......you just run the wires to the amp....The other option which is a line level converter which i used is a box that you can buy that goes from your speaker wires to the box then you buy RCA's to connect from the line box to the amp. You can use these 2 methods if you want to stay with the factory deck

Sorry I meant speaker-level to my amp, and the amp I have allows both types (RCA and speak-level). I guess a more direct connection is preferred (i.e. without going through a line convertor).

But my question is, how do I tap into or splice the rear speakers to feed my sub? Do I need to solder or I remember seeing something that would allow me to tap into it without soldering?

Does anyone else do this?

You can buy splicers at a variety of places (Radio Shack, Wal-Mart etc.) which are comprised of two parts. The first one basically clips onto a wire and pinches through the insulation, thereby making contact with the wire. The second part is a spade style connector that plugs onto the clip. No cutting or soldering required!

Is splicing into the rear speakers for the sub signal advisable? I plan to just splice the rear left and right speakers to feed into the amp's speaker-level inputs.

That's the way I did it. It sounds okay.

I had a Pioneer HU in my 6th gen and running the sub off the RCA pre-amp outputs sounded much better, but with a stock HU we don't have the luxury of pre-amp outputs. Since the sub is getting a signal that's already amplified through the HU's amp it's not going to sound as clean as it could be, but it's still better than nothing.

I have an Infinity Basslink, which has volume and gain adjustments. If your amp/sub doesn't have any adjustments like that make sure to get a line level converter that has adjustable output so you can fine tune your bass level.
