Adding Fog Lights..

2001 Civic Si coupe (EX to you 'mericans) that did not come with fog lights from the factory, purchased some from eBay today. Will I have to wire them completely from scratch or is there an existing plug 'n play setup already in my car? Cheers

Re: Adding Fog Lights..

Did you buy them for looks or for light output? You will find that the light output of aftermarket fog lights is quite bad compared to OEM stanley units. It is unfocused, uneven, and has a very wavy cutoff. If you are just going for the looks of having fog lamps you don't even need to wire them up. Ezone has a set of pictures comparing a brand new stanley unit to a brand new "china" unit and you can see the difference is very large.

Either way whatever you do, DONT for any circumstances put an HID kit into the foglights. Honestly unless you actually are driving in fog with your low beams off and are going less than 30 mph foglamps don't help your nighttime vision. They actually hurt it. The increased foreground lighting makes people feel more secure since everything up close is better illuminated, but it also causes your eyes to dilate which greatly decreases your nighttime distance vision.

And think about it from this point of view foglamps only light up about 40 feet in front of the car. At 60mph you will cross that 40 feet of light in less than 1/2 of 1 second. Anything that foglamps are going to illuminate will be under the car before you can react to it at highway speeds.

Having said all this. I do agree that from an appearance standpoint foglamps can add to the visual appeal of a car.

Here is some reading on automotive lighting from an expert.

Not dilate. Your pupils constrict due to the light.

Top blur of light is the knock off.
Bottom beam is the Genuine light from Honda.
