I F'd Up BAD!
ok so i dont actually own a 2002 civic, its my cousins but i've been doing some mod work for him. well last night i read a thread on some other honda forum about swapping gauge faces, the one on it previous was white, but i found one that was black so last night i swapped it over, well i was pullin off the needles and well, the smaller ones for the temp gauge and the fuel came off WITH a small metal pin attached
IM SURE! thats not supposed to happen, well now, i idnt reset the nedles corretly the rpms are like 200 over and the speedo is off by 10!
Well those two move fine! except the speedo doesnt move down as quick as it used to!
well the speedo and RPMS are the least of worries cause those just need a quick adjusting, but the Temp and Fuel are the worst of problems!
last night it had 2 bars above E but today i filled up the gas so it should be at the highest line! BUT IT WONT MOVE! Neither will the temp, it used to be in the middle but now it says its cold! SO Can someone please tell me how to fix asap
PLEASE HELP! I NEED THIS INFO ASAP!
Im Not new to forums, I Go by Gr91 on the Toyotanation forums, so yes guys im a toyota guy -.- but im sure differences aside you guys could help
BTW you guys have ALOT more smileys available on the side ----->>>> im definitely stealing some lol but thanks guys i can give more info if needed! just help asap please

Re: I Messed up super bad help fast!!
sorry to say if the pins came out, the cluster is trash. i spent hours trying to recalibrate and install the needles but they never worked. try and find another cluster on ebay that is a close match to your mileage.
Re: I Messed up super bad help fast!!

:hith ead:

are you dead serious?! damn it! I Cannot have it like that!
and the car stores the mileage in the cluster correct? what else could i do real fast, the only way im sure I could not find a cluster close to mileage, i either need it around the 500 mile range above or below and that will be impossible considering this civic gets used mildly and every other civic is used like a trashbag! **** i need suggestions, could i de-solder the odometer from the ****ed up cluster to the one i got the faces off of? or is that way to dificult, i basically need this fixed tonight!! and it has to be the correct mileage or very little above or below! i need to check the mileage real quick! but suggestions! is this website even active? or is there somewhere more lively?!
Re: I F'd Up BAD!
Yea i did that as well with out pulling the metal pin out, as far as i understand there is no way to calibrate the gauges but you can wait for your car to cool off (wait overnight) then out the key in the on position and take the needles off and place them on zero. As far as the temp gauge i put mine a little below the bottom line and it seems to be where it was before which was a little above half. The fuel gauge...i found out by coasting off the road without any gas. i got about 90 miles when the fuel light came on though. To address the needle sticking problem don't push them down so far on the pin so i can actually move freely. hope this helps i had to find out the hard way

Re: I Messed up super bad help fast!!
well if you buy a new cluster from honda (way more expensive) it starts at 0 miles. you cannot solder odometer because the pins will break trying to get it out. and you need to open the cluster which will mess it up. you can spend all day and night fiddling and it will never work the same as before. just get a new one and move on. there is nothing else to be done.
Re: I F'd Up BAD!
****. Im just goin to buy a cluster with the same amount of mileage, i need it to be over 118,000 miles, now i found one on ebay and its 900 over the exact mileage right now, the only thing is the broken cluster is an Lx model, but this ebay one is a DX model can someone tell me some of the major differences besides the bvious No Tachometer? like ABS light or srs light all that?

Re: I F'd Up BAD!
lx and dx are the same as far as warning lights. it becomes more of a problem when you have an ex and use an lx/dx cluster (no abs light, side srs, etc). you should be fine other than the tach. only other thing to look at when ordering new clusters is the backlight. sedan uses green, coupe uses orange.
Re: I F'd Up BAD!
Ok trust me lighting is the least of my worries, now i have some other interesting questions,
Like i said this isnt my car, and its my aunts its been completely untouched until my dumbass put my Bear Hands on it!/
So she's been passing Inspection always! So now if i get a new cluster, would She FAIL inspection?
also I was thinking, since i have two cluster, (or i can go get another one out the junkyard) Do you think it is possible to take off the temp gauge mover thing off the second one, on to the broken one? It seems like its just soldered on there just solder and move the tabs it seems, do you thin it would work? cause i'd rather do that then get the DX gauge. but if i could pass inspection with the dx gauge id just go with the dx gauge.
because i think i heard the odometer is on both the car computer AND the Speedo cluster, the RPMS and MPH's are working theyre a bit off, but i know that can be fixed its just the Fuel and Temp gauge.

Re: I F'd Up BAD!
there is no reason a cluster would fail inspection. the only problem i see is if the mileage is lower than it should be and the station records mileage. if they report to carfax or something, it might be flagged for odometer fraud when you try and sell the car later. and you dont need a tach to pass inspection. you can always look for a tach cluster later and swap it in, it took me a few months to find one that matches my mileage. in these cars, the odometer is stored in the eeprom chip inside the cluster, not the ecu. very select few shops have the $10k machine required to set a new mileage and it costs around $150 for them to do it (with proof of the actual mileage ofcourse), more than what a different cluster is worth.
Re: I F'd Up BAD!
I Know about the Tacho meter, i Meant this civic with the broken cluster has 118,069 original miles, the ebay dx cluster that i may get has 118,942. now would you think i would fail for it being OVER mileage? as you can see its very very close! its over by about 870 miles, so if they inspect the vehicle, would they hook it up to the car computer, and see that the mileage on the ODO doesnt match with the computer? i know you answered that already, but i want to make sure 100% about this! I NEED to be 100% about this!
I hate to sound ignorant and what not but I really only work mostly on early to late model 90's toyotas. but thanks

Re: I F'd Up BAD!
If it helps with piece of mind, there's a company that does mileage resets for $85 if you ship the cluster to them.

Re: I F'd Up BAD!
having the mileage be over by a reasonable amount can just be explained away by saying you drove more. now if your mileage went up by 10k in a day, that might be a problem. 870 miles over is like nothing. and there is no way they can pull mileage info from the obdii port with a scanner (on any newer car). ecu does not store mileage, otherwise swapping in a new cluster would keep the old mileage.
Re: I F'd Up BAD!
Yeah mind bomber i can see with all his involvement in the LED thread and his join date!
And thanks Imma bookmark that page so that way in case i find a regular tacho speedo i can just send it to them, i may pull another from the wrecking yard, test it, and send it off!
it bothers ME not having a tach. even with auto trans. in my 91 corolla, that was so annoying, i cold have an idle problem and i couldnt telll!
thanks GEARBOX! I bought the speedo, and hopefully getts here in time! In the meanwhile, since i cannot read the fuel I will Make sure it is filled up until the new speedo gets here, the good thing is the car doesnt get used so much anymore since my cousin finally got his permit and my aunt got an audi she gave the civic to him. i feel a load off my shoulders, thanks so much you guys!

Re: I F'd Up BAD!
the thing i figured out a long time ago with cars is, its hard to mess something up that cant be replaced. almost always you can still get ahold of nearly any part you might break by mistake. its the only way to really learn. altho with better cars the parts get more expensive so you have to be more careful.
