05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

First, I'm sure this is a douple post of something somewhere, but after a couple of hours of Googling I still have some questions and clarifications needed.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic EX Sedan. It currently has an aftermarket head unit for my iPod, but all factory speakers. I would like to add new component speakers (probably the 6.5" Alpine Type-R components), but I am unsure what to do with the tweeters.

The sail panels (behind the side mirrors) seemed like a good place, but after popping off the panel, I found that there is a wire harness taking up most of the space back there. However, after looking around, I have seen numerous pictures of sail panels with tweeter mounting locations in them, as well as talk regarding factory tweeters.

Does my car (05 sedan EX) have factory tweeters in it somewhere that I haven't found, or are there stock tweeters in similar models?

Where can I find these sail panels in which I can mount tweeters, and how much do they cost? Also, would the Type-R tweeters (with a mounting diameter of 2") fit in them?

Is there a better place to put tweeters besides the sail panels?

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

you can put them in the sail panels by doing a surface mount on the front. that way you dont have space issues in the back. the coupes come with factory tweeters in that spot but the panels will not work on sedans. i had infinity tweeters mounted on the factory sedan sail panels. i still have em somewhere just took it off when i got rid of my speaker amp (theyre separate tweeters, not components, so i couldnt have them wired up anymore without the other 4 speakers running off the amp). some people put tweeters in the door panel too.

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

Alright, I'll look at doing a surface mount I guess. Is there a way to angle them towards me though instead of pointing mostly sideways towards the passenger door?

it points at a good angle, not straight at your ears which can be annoying, but good enough that you hear them

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

Alright, I'll probably just do that, the tweeters can angle some.

Also, can anyone help me with my other problem of running power to the trunk?

Very nice, another JL freak on board

I can't go anywhere near other brands except maybe hifonics(amps) and polks(for speakers only)

I currently removed my rear speakers though, planning to mount some 1" tweeters in the rear panel though

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

Just throwing an idea out there for a slick tweeter mount. Why not use the windshield pillar mount? Those expensive guage pod things would make for a nice custom mount. If you had the time and loot to do it. I think it would look and sound pretty cool. You can probably order the same style guage pod for the right side in the JDM application.

People do that, and they even put 3~4 in speakers in bigger cars on pillar

Most likely those gauges will only fit 1" tweeters, but I dont really want them there since I already have them in my sail panel.

However, I have the coupe, and next to the rear seats are the side panels I do want to mount a tweeter in, I was even thinking of some 4"...but I think tweeters would be better.

The best location is always as close to the woofer as possible for sound quality and sound stage. Whichever method you choose, most manufacturers recommend that you mount your tweeters within 12" of the woofers. Otherwise, the high and low frequencies may reach your ears at different times, resulting in a sonic wave cancellation or "phase interference."

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

well when the mids face outwards and way down on the door basically being covered by your legs i don't think it that big of a deal. i find the best place is around the door handle area.

While that is true, isn't it more important that the distances between the listener and the woofer/tweeter be within 12" of each other? For example, I think it should be OK to have the woofer 3' away from the listener and the tweeters 3' in a slightly different direction.

Alright, so I got the speakers today and opened them up and stuff, but it doesn't look like the type-rs come with a good way to surface mount. It seems that I have to go 3/4" down into whatever surface I'm mounting them to, and I don't know if there's enough space for that. Can I buy some sort of separate surface mount cups or something that I can use to install the tweeters?

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

The Alpine Type-Rs that I got didn't have anything to surface mount them with, so I think I will have to drill a hole and do a flush mount. However, I keep seeing pictures of these all over the internet

and I found these part numbers also:
76221-S5P-A10ZA
76271-S5P-A10ZA

However, I have heard that they are only for the EX Coupes (I have a sedan), but I have heard from some people that you can fit them in the sedans. Can I please get a definitive answer from someone?

If that doesn't work, I was going to put them in the door panel like this

but there isn't a flat surface (my tweeters need a 2" hole and then go out more from there on the outside). Is that OK or will it pose a problem?

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

Coupe sail panels will not fit into the sedans.

If you had a coupe LX, GX, etc... the EX sails will fit.

You're better off putting them in the panel

Re: 05 Civic Sedan Tweeter Questions

Alright, I finally finished today.
Having no luck with the sail panels, I decided to just cut a hole and mount the tweeters in the door panel. Everything went smoothly and the curvature of the panel was not an issue.

very nice! i'll probably do this when i switch out the speakers in my civic. on my last car (1998 corolla) i had a lot of problems with tweeters and the sails. ended up just screwing them in awkwardly.
