hooking up playstation 2

this is actually on my friends car but he asked me to ask you guys...

he has a playstation hooked up to a FM modulator and a power inverter. when he turns on the power inverter, there's a humming noise coming from all the speakers. n when he turns on the ps2 it gets even louder. this even happens when the AV cables from the ps2 AREN'T hooked up to the fm modulator. any ideas on what's causing the humming? i'm thinking the power inverter wire isn't insulated enough and is causing interference somehow to the headunit. if this is the case how would i insulate it better? or maybe its just running too close to some RCA wire(i dont think this is the case cause the amp power wire is fine...)?

if you think its the power inverter wire then just twist the wire around any metal chassis to negate noise that would interfere...my guess would be the FM modulator

Yes, it is the inverter. Inverters are known for their humming noises that they cause. However I don't have humming on my setup. I'm gonna actually ditch the inverter soon, and make a DC-DC power supply for my computer. That way I can just directly hookup power from my battery to my car.

Inverters also pull A LOT of power. Although its easy to hookup via an inverter, there are to major downsides. Noise (interferance), and the fact that it draws a lot of power.

I don't know what you can do for a PS2 though...

I dont know if this matters but I know that your power and RCA cables must be at least 18 inches apart or you get interference. possible the he has cables somewhere that are too close or not a proper ground and it humms. one

ya thats what i thought, but it hums when the AV cables aren't hooked in. n i know the RCA cables from the headunit to the amp are on the other side. but i'm thinking its interfering with the FM modulator cause i think thats on the same side as the inverter(not sure cause i didn't install it). but the ground wire.. that i have yet to check....

If it's not the RCA cables, then its most likley the inverter. Trust me, inverters are NOTORIOUSLY known for their buzzing and humming that comes from the speakers...

Yeah...I'm hearing that humming noise too. Here are the many steps that I went through:

LOUD humming noise so I bought the Sony AUX add on for my cd player and it helped it out a bunch, replacing the FM Modulator.
Put a ground loop isolator in, and the noise cut was pretty wimpy...not that much change.
Put in the most basic MonsterCables for the PS2 and it sounded a little worse....going to need to change it.
RCA cables....haven't tried.

But since I went through all that it's been narrowed down I suppose to the inverter or RCA cables? The guy said that most RCA cables are shielded, but he didn't answer my question and I'm not too sure where to buy good quality RCA cables since Best Buy lead me to amp cables and I don't have an amp. The installers couldn't figure out the problem, but the slight humming noise is not really top notch in my expectation book.

Are there any inverters that DON'T make a humming noise or is there any way for the noise to stop? Also as I accelerate the noise is amplied *I was told it was alternator whine, but wouldn't it have disappeared with the isolator...or maybe the RCA cables AREN'T shielded?*

Thanks for the help.

already fixed the problem it was the power inverter... he had one that was hooked up to his battery, not he has one that connects to the cig light and no more noise...
