0 Gauge From Alt

I've been searching the forums and would using 0 gauge from the HO alternator (170amp) to the battery cause too much resistance or would four gauge be perfectly fine.

Thanks

Re: 0 Gauge From Alt

Yea that's what read as well, I guess I'm just curious as to why anything larger could be a problem.

In theory, larger gauge (with all other things equal) can only lower resistance.

0 Gauge is a little silly for that I think.

yep. i don't remember the equations from physics, but basically envision the wire as a pipe with water. you're going to have friction at the edges where the water is rubbing against the pipe walls. that equates to resistance in electrical terms. the bigger the pipe, the less friction in the center of the pipe. so the bigger the wire, the less resistance to current flow, the less heat build up, and the higher the amp capacity.

Re: 0 Gauge From Alt

yep, that's it. so the bigger the cross-sectional area, the lower your resistance. of course, this assumes all other things equal as you said. if you compare premium 4ga to cheap 0/1ga, you may have a high resistance on the 0/1 due to cheap design.

Specifically the p (actually lowercase greek letter Rho) would be different for different materials. This term stands for resistivity which is a kind of molecular resistance for a given material.

So yes, a wire with more area could have higher resistance than a smaller area wire if the larger wire's resistivity is considerably bigger than the cross-sectional area difference between the two.

Re: 0 Gauge From Alt

i think that's the problem. people think that all power wire is created equal. so they see JL Audio power wire's cost at 4ga and think the cheap no-name 0/1 for the same price and think the 0/1 must be better since it's bigger.......

Re: 0 Gauge From Alt

^^ well if your alt is stock it will def fry out in no time. i am running a jl 1000/1 with a jl w7 and my stock alt blew out in a week of hardcore bumpin bass and my amp only pushes out 1000 rms compared to your 1200 rms. you need to upgrade the alt, if you have done that already everything should be good. 4ga is fine as well; i am running 4ga on my system too as recommended by JL.
