Should I Change My Head Unit?

Well the previous owner installed a jvc head unit in the car, probably because it is a dx and didnt come with a cd player. I dont really like the way it looks but i can live with it if it is too hard to swap em out. I have an older sony xplode head unit from like 2004 (not sure how old the jvc is), but im not sure how easy it would be to swap em out, or if its even worth it... Are there any problems with wiring or anything i would have to replace to swap the xplode into the car? Or is it as simple as pull one out stick one in? Heres the best pic i have of the mentioned jvc

Re: Should I Change My Head Unit?

It's definitely worth replacing. Thats the same head unit that I had in my car when I bought it. It's pretty simple, all you do it take it out and rewire the new one in. If your not handy with this kind of thing just take it to BestBuy or somewhere where they put in stereos and they can do it for you for around $50.
Hope that this helps!

but its reallly easssyyyy to do. I had never even touched a car and it was my first mod. Just match the colors and solder, then plug and screw.

Re: Should I Change My Head Unit?

thanks for the info guys. so your saying i would have to cut some wires and solder in order to swap this aftermarket unit with another aftermarket unit? i was thinking that since this one is aftermarket, all the wiring and whatnot would already be done, and all i would have to do is unplug it and plug a new one in lol

Re: Should I Change My Head Unit?

Basically, yes. Cut, match, and solder. I would buy a new wiring harness though that fits your car though. They are like $8 if that. Also, best of luck getting that headunit out. You have to rip apart just about half the car it seems like to get to it. I don't even remember where I found the directions and schematic to do it, but if I do I'll send it to you.

Re: Should I Change My Head Unit?

a soldering iron cost like $7 at your local radio shack. for a cheapy. You could spend more if you plan to solder later.

You really don't even need to solder them if you want/ if you don't know how to. Also you could just use butt connectors. To be honest I think that they work better with less of a possibility of the connection coming apart.

Re: Should I Change My Head Unit?

yeah.. if you arent sure about how handy you are just twist and tape..

butt connectors suck.. they have a tendency to fall out.. use them in your house not your car bc your car vibrates goin down the road.. you hit bumps and dips and what not.. just not a good idea in a car. they just arent secure enough
