Fog Light install question

Ok...this morning on my way to work, I hit a racoon the size of a baby elephant and did about $1,600 damage to my baby...I love comprehensive insurance! It's a 2001 Civic EX Coupe. Since the bumper cover (or bumper as I call it) is getting replaced, I thought I'd take this chance to have factory fog lights installed. I'm want to buy the factory kit from HandA, comes complete with wiring and the whole deal.

Here's my question...is there a way I can install the wiring such that the fog lights won't turn off when I turn my high-beams on?

I have always hated that fog lights turn off when you hit the highs. I live out in the country, if I had the money and thought I was cool enough, I have a big bar of KC's mounted to my roof. But in the mean time, I'd love to have the additional light of the fogs on even when I've got the highs on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

-Nate

Re: Fog Light install question

yes you can. that's how i have mine. just hook the relay coil to constant on power, and put a switch on the ground coil. or switch the positive, doesn't matter. you run the risk of leaving them on and killing your battery though. i hooked my relay coil to the parking lights so if i leave the lights on, the warning chime will remind me to turn them off. i've killed too many batteries by leaving fog lights on before.

Or power the positive side of the coil with accessory power from the ignition harness and then through your switch to avoid the potential drain problems.

cover $250 dealer
paint material $400+
paint labor $500+
emblems and labor to install $100+

I've been down this road twice when people have hit me. both times it was over $1200 to get the damage repaired and that's assuming there's no structural damage. if there is, the cost jumps even more.

Re: Fog Light install question

that sucks i had to replace my bumper b4 too. cost me under $300 for a new oem bumper painted off ebay and i installed it. i still have body damage but i have hook ups so just to do the body work alone the estimate was $3600 but a friend of a friend can do it on the side for $600 plus $600 to repaint the entire car.
and ppl have taken my emblems b4, i just get em off ebay, they are cheaper

Re: Fog Light install question

Actually, the bumper cover was the cheapest part of the deal. Sucker left a divet in my radiator the size of a football. Radiator, lower support brackets, A/C condensor and bent the front tie bar (as indicated by the right front corner of the hood being higher than the fencer - this issue is only suspected by the local shop and will be verified on a frame rack). So all that junk plus labor and wham-o - $1,600. Just got a price from the shop to install factory fog light kit. I've done work on my car - battery relo, struts, custom XM mount/install, etc. Any of you guys installed OEM fog lights? Is this an approachable task for an average-skill-level DIYer? I've not done anything removing body panels (ie bumper cover) and that's what scared me away. Thoughs?

Re: Fog Light install question

well im guessin oem is easier than ebay fogs, but i did it when i had no clue about cars and it went fine. they have been running for almost a year i think. bumper takes like 2-3 min to take off, then u take off pass. side fender well and some interior panels an sheet. its sounds like a lot but isnt really that hard
