Components? what's the diff?

What's the difference between component speakers and just plain old speakers? And what exactly are crossovers, which seem to come with any set of component speakers i can find? thanks!

component speakers are just a name for a pair of midrange, tweeters, and crossovers, crossovers are designed to in a sense separate your music, tweeters get all higher pitch sound, midrange like the name says gets your mid pitch sound, and subs get the lower end sound, the crossovers will just let high notes come through and same down the line just like there shouldn't be awhole lot of words coming out of your subs, thats what the midrange is mostly for

thanks, so would you suggest getting component speakers, or just getting some good speakers and buying separate crossovers?

Definately components.. that way you can mount the tweeters higher up andlose most of your left channel high's because your knees are absorbing the sound .. better sound stage with components. better midbass.. better sound in general.

Cheers

Head units don't come with crossovers (at least in the sense your thinking) If a head unit had a built in crossover it would have many speaker outputs... Instead of 4, it would have 12 speaker outputs. Three for each "channel" 1 mid, 1 high, and 1 low for each of the 4 corners of your car. If you truely find a head unit like that, you probably can't afford it. I recommend the components, but it depends on what you want. If you just want in improved sound, you should be okay with the coaxials, but if your going for sq (sound quality) the compenents are the only way to go. Just buy the facotry tweeter pods and mount the tweeter in there. Its mainly preference, just keep in mind that there is ALWAYS something bigger and better, it just depends on how much you want to pay.

You can install regular 6 & 1/2'' in the door, but without the crossover the tweeters wont work, they'll be there for show.

yes, i also recommend a set of components. great clean crisp sound the cross over really does it's job, i can hear all the chirps and dings in the tweeter, and the air move in the 6.5
