Lower frequencies are less directional, not subs. Technically you are correct, but for purposes of an install think in terms of sound, not equipment.

The trunk is also a good place for subs because they tend to not fit well elsewhere in the vehicle.

The originating location of a point source is difficult to discern under ~100Hz.

to take this even further
localization in the lateral plane, ie, horizontal, start to fade away at 100 hz or so
but
localization in the vertical plane, does not start until about 1 khz

So the ability to detect the origin of sound is much more difficult when the wavepath is horizontal?

That sucks for people who 'glass 8" and 10" into their footwells to acheive low frequencies when they're firing diagonally
