not that smart with amps......

ok i have a kenwood amp KAc 9202(not the best i know ) and a 12" kenwood sub kfc w3010 (once again not the best i know...and yes.... A sub, moneys tight )
the amp is 902 max watt.... 460 rms bridged
my sub is 1000 max watt .... 400 rms
i was told i could go ahead and run the two together, but had to change something on the amp.... (What would that be and change it to what?)
Is this ok?? or am i in trouble?

and....its only a 2 channel amp but is there any way of hooking it up for one sub and two speakers?????

sorry..... this is all knida new to me,

You need to bridge the amp, and properly set the gain. Make sure the amp is set to low pass, and if its selectable, set it around 60 hz. You'll be just fine. As far as the subs and speakers off the same amp, not possible unless its a 4 channel with a hp/lp filter for each set of channels, or its a 3 channel amp made for such a setup.

I'd think most of that is jibberish to you, since you're unfamiliar with amps.

No. You won't be able to run two speakers and a sub off of your two channel amplifier.

Running a 400W RMS sub with a 460W RMS amp is not a problem at all. One thing to keep in mind is that your amp will probably rarely push 460W. You'll just want to be sure that you're not overpowering the sub and causing it to distort (or clip).

The first step to ensuring your setup works is installing it properly. Look at these links for some help:

MTX Amp Guide
JL Single Voice Coil Wiring

You'll want to ensure that you connect to the bridged positive and negative terminals on your amp. There will be four connectors for speakers (since it's two channel), two + and two -. For your setup you're only going to need one + and one - (likely the ones farthest from each other), but you'll want to check with the manual to be sure (you'll get no sound or a burned up amp if you don't).

Now, to set the GAIN. In order to do this, there will be a dial on the amp labeled GAIN. Once you get everything installed:

1) Turn the GAIN to it's lowest level.
2) Using a song with a lot of bass, turn on the radio and crank it up to 80-85% of the highest level you'll think you'll ever use (probably pretty loud).
3) Go to the amp, and begin increasing the GAIN level slowly. The sub will get louder and louder.
4) Do this slowly until you begin to hear some clicking or popping noises from the speaker (with your ear very close to the speaker, they will be faint).
5) Now you've found the max level your sub can handle, so turn down the gain a bit.
6) Listen to a few songs from close to the speaker to ensure that there is no popping noises being made. If so, decrease the gain a bit more.

Mystic mentioned the low pass filter. I can't find any information on the amplifier model you listed, but I'd think it probably has what's known as a variable low-pass filter. It will be labeled on the amp (and in the manual), and will likely range from 20 or 50Hz - 250 or 500Hz. I'd set this around 80-100Hz, but you can tweak it to your liking later.

Now, get in your car, turn the volume down a bit so as not to disturb the neighboors, then take your new tunes for a cruise around town.

The best feeling ever is the first drive with some new nicely tuned subs in the trunk.

And P.S. - Don't be self concious that you don't have enough money now for W7's. A cheap 12" sub is how everybody starts off. Start installing stuff and if you like it enough, some day that's what you'll buy.

thanks for all the help....
and i did make a mistake.....
ya cant find my amp because what i put doesnt exist.......
i have da kenwood KAC-7202 not 9202.....srry

and about the putting 2 speakers and one sub on a two channel amp...
i didnt think it was possable...but bestbuy dude said it was ...so i looked around.... and i found this.......
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ZeacSiq...arch=tri%2Dway
its a TRI-Way Crossover..... it has two filters on it (so does my amp but this runs both at the same time i guess)---one for the sub and one that would go to the two speackers...
Anyone have any ideas on how these work and if one would work for me??
since my amp puts out 150W RMS (continuous) x 2 @ 4 ohms .......then this would work right??? ......what would the final output be.....would it still be 150w RMS x 2@4 ohms plus a sub(what the hell would that be at?? ) i feel like i am in 5th grade,, at least i maken all you who help me feel real real smart(your welcome )

srry bout the icons too..i think they are comical
Once again....thanks for any help you can offer
