how to determine which amp....

yo fellaz...hows it goin?.

i got these subs right, and im thinkin about getting a new amp. and before i start, let me let you know that im pretty illiterate about this stuff...but im a quick learner..

this is what i got right now:
MTX 801D
and 2 MTX thunder 8000's, which are DVC 4 ohm, 400 RMS

how do you guys determine which amp to get, cause im having someone tell me to get the mtx 8100 amp, which puts out 500 @ 4 ohm, 1000 @ 2 ohm and 1500 @ 1 ohm

but wouldn't that mean that i'd only be putting 250 per sub @ 4 ohm

and with my current amp its 400 @ 4 ohm, so im already puttin 200 per sub @ 4 ohm....or am i missing sumtin??

cause i can't wire the subs @ 2 ohm load??..or can i??

and if I were to wire them @ 1 ohm load...isn't bad if I put that much power to the subs??

I know its a lot of questions, but I would GREATLY appreciate ur response!!

Thank You!

heres a great link on how to wire your subs and get which ohm load: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=145

sub amps (mono amp, class-d, etc) have single channels, meaning you cannot bridge 2 channels to make it into 1 load. its + to + and - to -

you can wire your subs at 1ohm, 4ohm, doesnt matter. if the amp and sub has the capability to run at that ohm, then your fine. i believe ohm has to do more with resistance.

i highly recommend you browse around this site for few minutes when you have free time: http://www.bcae1.com <----that site is probably the most informative on car audio and how electricals work in general.

if you have two DVC 4-ohm subs, you would want a mono amp thats 1-ohm stable. their are plently mono [class-d] amps that are 1-ohm stable.

You will be ok with the 8100.

I looked at the specs of the amps on the MTX website. For the 8100 those are RMS ratings but for 14.4 VDC. our cars only put out 12.5 VDC. So unless you are running them off a different power supply you wont get that much output.

Your current amp puts out 250X1 at 4 ohm and 500X1 at 2 ohm at the 12.5 VDC.

You can wire your subs in 2 ways, parallel at 1 ohm or a combination of series/parallel at 4 ohm. With 2 speakers you wont be able to wire them at 2 ohm. another good resource for wiring is,
http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/wo...igurations.asp

So you have some options. You can get the new amp and wire them at 1ohm or 4 ohm, you will just have to turn the gains down so you dont blow the sub if going with 1 ohm. Or you could buy another amp like the one you already have. Power each sub at 2 ohm from seperate amps. Its probably cheaper to go that way and you would be putting 500w to each sub. Again, you probably dont want the gains all the way up.

oh...so since our cars only put out 12.5 vdc or watever, the amp at 1 Ohm would only put out 750 RMS...right??...so the sub would be getting about 375 per??..

Nope.

Bear with me I'm still learning parts of this as well. I did some more research. 12.5V is is the voltage the system is at with the car off. 14.4 V is is the voltage the system is at with the car on and with a minimal load on the electrical system. So smaller amps can run at or close to 14.4V most of the time.

Anyway, running at 1 ohm you will probably be close to the 1500w, putting 750 to each sub. Thats quite a bit more power than they are rated for but you will be ok if you listen to it and adjust your gains so that you dont blow the subs.

one last question if you dont mind....since my amp is puttin 200 to a sub that can handle 400, wat would happen if i turned the gain all the way up?? would the subs blow??...would the amp fry?

I assume you are talking about your current amp. Basicaly no. As far as I know there are 2 major reasons that speakers blow. The first one is distortion, so if you hear any just turn the gain down, but I doubt you will have any of that. The other one would be if you put way more power to your sub than it could handle.

Out of those you listed I would go with the Hifonics TXi-7506, Hifonics-PIC1.900 or the Soundstream. Probably in that order.I dont have much experisnce with the other ones. Either way, any of those apms will have enough power for your subs.
