97 Civic DX needs a lil help

Hey everyone.. I'm new on here and I'm hoping someone can help, I have a 97 civic dx d1y6 model engine. Couple months back I replaced the whole exhaust system, valve gasket and oil seals. Recently about a week or so ago she broke down on me at work. I had turned her on and a loud squealing came from one of the belts I figured but then the engine started to shake and the car shut off. It also smelled like rubber. My bro said it could have been a number of things, ac compressor, timing belt may have chipped, power steering pump, a pulley could have seized or worse the harmonic balancer. What I want to know is, is there anyway to determine what could cause these symptoms. Any help, knowledge or anything would be greatly appreciated thanks again.

Inspect the accessory belts (loose, torn, missing). If they look fine pull the valve cover off and check the timing belt.

Also verify the ac pulley is spinning free. Probably would be easy to hear where the noise is coming from if you do that post a pic with an arrow or even a video we can give even more specific ideas of what to check. But check belts for wear and then we need to figure out what caused the unusual wear pattern. Keep us informed.

I've seen a locked up pulley keep an engine from cranking.....

Remove belts one at a time until it will start?

Re: 97 Civic DX needs a lil help

Just giving you guys an update. So I changed all the belts, timing, water pump and idle as well. Basically as my brother and I worked on it we saw that a bolt must have broken off the alternator right at the threading so thyme alt was replaced. When I did try to turn the car on nothing happened as if no power was running checked the battery it was good but I did replace the 80A fuse that helped but the car won't fully turn over. My bro thinks that it had a domino affect so as on piece messed up something else did as well. He said I should check the crank sensor and the spark plugs and all wires just in case. So if any of you have any other ideas it would be great thanks again. I'll be posting pics once I'm back home.

Throwing parts and money at is not the right way to go about it (unless belts and parts were due for change, anyway.). Is the starter and solenoid working properly? You may want to remove and test it as shown in video below. Check it's teeth for excessive wear or breakage, and check the flywheel's teeth.
When you guys did the timing belt did you notice any abnormal resistance when cranking the engine manually (counter-clockwise)? Is it a manual or automatic transmission?

Everything was normal when we checked the timing belt and replaced the parts. The process ended up to be preventative maintenance due to the fact the other belts were really bad. So I know that later on the line those parts would have needed changed. I have not checked the solenoid and the starter, but I will do so thank you for the video and the info.
