laptop ideas?
hey guys, i just got my laptop and my system integrated, but i'm having a hard time thinking up a mount, i want something that is hideable or something of the sort, or easily removable, and i need it to swivel so on my road trips, my passenger can play halo, watch movies, play ut, etc. any ideas?
I don't use a laptop but I am running a computer in my car. It consists of a Mini ITX motherboard and a liliput monitor molded in the dash. You might want to check out www.mp3car.com they have info on everything you will ever need to know about putting a computer in your car (laptop or molded in)
laptop.... = put it on your lap :-)
Umm good Q I'm tyring to think of something but nothing feasable is coming to mind. Maybe you could make some sort of tray that comes out of the glovebox when its open and the passenger can just set it on there like a table top... but it would be hard to have enough space for the laptop and the USB mouse cuz I'm sure u dont want to use the laptop mouse when playin a shooting game (I know I dont)

I dont know it it would even need to be strengthened... laptops only weight 6-8 lbs... i think mine is like 6.6
The only way that I think is reasonably doable is to make it out of the glovebox... I cant think of anyother way that you would be able to hide it very easily

I was also thinking of a way to make a swivle mount that goes down on the passenger side that could mount to the floor board or even a little higher on the passenger side that could fold down in between the seat and the console

haha
its got a hinge and a swivel. When its not being used it would sit parallel to the seat and center console. then it would swivel up above the center console, still parrallel. then you let the hinge work and it drops to a resting point right above your lap.

Why not rig something for your glove box that mounts your laptop inside it, and have the screen be viewable, then get a wirless keyboard/mouse combo, just a thought....
Well po po's have laptops in their cruisers, why don't u check out what they use. It is not going to be hidden, but they make stands for computers that mount to the floorboard and have swivel tops. Check out this link http://www.ebatterytechmounts.com/ . Some stuff doesnt look nice but will do the job.

my set up is going to be a 12" Apple Powerbook G4 (broke screen and cant hold a charge, it was dropped off a table) mounted under my pass seat, then im gunna run that to a 6.5-7" touch screen molded into my dash. the sound will then run out of the laptop and into an extra 300watt amp i got layin around and to my speakers. its gunna be sick, and everyone has pcs in their car, no one has a mac lol

classic
as suggested above, you can always make some sort of custom mount from your glove box or something similar like booba5185 suggested. there's a company out there that makes diff computer mounts for diff cars.

simple. its the psasenger, not you. he has a lap.
all you need is a panelmount 120 volt plug and a panel mount USB plug. behind the panel goes the inverter and the USB hub. that way, you only have TWO connections. USB. Power.
when the laptop is out, all you see is a USB port and power port. so its clean.
when its in, your passenger has all the access he could want. the USB hub holds all the devices you are going to install around the car. GPS, integrated wireless accessories, soundcard, etc.
FYI, I chose the docking station method. I dont think itll work for you, because theres nowhere to put a dock up front. But it makes for a wonderful way to connect all your USB accessories, TV screens, audio out, audio in, etc at one point, hide all wiring, and be done with it.
but if you wanted something thats SUPER modular, you can get a mobile dock that does everything from video to parallel port from one USB connection. you could use that on an extension with the poewr inverter, and have ultimate connectivity.
but physical install? just have your passenger chill with it on his lap.
