Equalizer vs Crossover
Equalizer vs Crossover
A guy I work with has 4 12" audiobahn subs and enclosure, accompanied by a capacitor(not sure what farad count is, as I haven't looked at it and won't until this saturday.) wiring harness, 3 1200 watt amps(brand unknown, he doesn't know much about what he has.)
It is up for sale, and he told me he would sell it to me for 150 bucks. As far as I am concerned AMAZING DEAL. I am pretty sure he doesn't knwo what he is selling and its value.
Anyway, I was wondering, with running that kind of power, should I buy an equalizer, or just go with the typical crossovers. Also what are the pros and cons of each.
With that said, could anyone assist me with how an eq would be incorporated into the wiring of 2 tweeters, 4 mids, and 4 subs?

That's alot of s*it for 150 bucks, but its Audiobahn, so yeah...might as well throw that money down the toilet. Trust me, I've had audiobahn products.
BTW, a crossover and an equalizer are two completely different things. An equalizer helps to fine tune a system, while a crossover is used to separate frequencies for tweets, mids, and subs.

lets see, if its just for the subs then the equalizer is basicly useless because the frequency range is so small that most equalizers do not have many settings that low. However if being integrated into a full system an equalizer will do you well. As far as a crossover, a crossover just selects which frequencies NOT to send to a speaker, it does not allow you to adjust a range of frequencies to adjust sound. It merely blocks certain frequencies to certain sets of speakers, therefore keeping bass out of your tweeters and mids while keeping highs out of your subs. an equalizier adjust the reference volume level at a specific frequency therefore allowing yo to control the overall sound by adjusting certain octaves and harmonics.

they both work to make your system better..
crossover---it allows the gain and reduction of the audio signal...it splits entire bandwidth of the signal into separate mid, base, and high...usually before amp...why...then individual amps will only have to amplifiy dedicated bandwidth of the signal....to make clean sound...also the reason is that audio amps are not good at enitre audio frequency...so breaking it down will result in better sound..also less distortion.
input---entire bandwidth...output...filtered signal...aka base, mid-base, mid, mid-high, high...
equalizer ---it allows the gain and reduction of the audio signal...does this after the signal is amplified..that is after the amp...in case of 1 amp...
input--entire bandwidth...output--entire bandwith
if you have 1 amp...get equalizer...if you have multiple amps get xover and/or equalizer..

Thank you all so much except for the guy and his sarcasm and absent minded comparison with the spoon analogy. But most of all thank you Devani, it is clear now that I misunderstood the idea of them both.
I recommend taking a tour of www.bcae1.com. both frequency and devani. I dont want you (frequency) making a money decision based on what devani told you. If confusion doesnt take over when you see the actual product, the inability to hook it up as he describes will.
basica car audio electronics site should have all the answers you are looking for. good luck.

Thanks for the recommondation.....I learned all that earning my EE degree....it certainly is good to know these things...
and also I work for telecommunications and test equipments products....
I do design, troubleshoot, test and make prototypes and final product....
Thats what I do for living and I also do/volunteer for audio mixing….
I am always learning too...so good luck with your search...

I just spent like two minutes seriously laughing my chair over that one.. and c'mon, Lud is ALWAYS full of sarcasm.. anyways that aside...
If you're a noob when it comes to car audio, check that site out the site that Whiterabbit told you about and maybe find a reputable shop in your area and talk to an installer and get his/her advice as well. I'm a big fan of the basic car audio website because it explains EVERYTHING and talking to an installer will be able to answer any other questions you may have
