Some people are just idiots...
I was talking to a guy at school today, about stereos. This guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. The first thing he said that was stupid, is that brand does not matter with stereo equipment. He tried to say that Jensen subs are just as good as Fosgate and Kicker subs, and that Audiovox CD players are just as good as Kenwood, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc. He tried to say that a 12" Jensen can play louder than any Fosgate or Kicker sub. He said the brand and power rating of the sub doesn't matter, and that it's all in how you position the sub(s). That's just plain dumb.
Then, he also said that his friend's system is better than mine just because it can be heard better outside of his truck. He has two 10" Jensens in an S-10...I don't know what kind of amp. I have two Fosgate Punch XLC's in my Sunbird convertible with a Clarion ProAudio APA-1200 amp (300w RMS @ 2 ohms). It hits hard enough to make my eyes jiggle...but you can't really hear it outside of the car. I think part of it is because the convertible top is soft, and it probably absorbs most of the sound before it can leave the car. Anyway, I know my subs have to hit harder than the two Jensens. Besides, as much as I like showing of my stuff, I prefer the sound to stay where it belongs...right inside the car with me. Hehe...I also accidentally offended a girl in the same class because I said "Jensen blows dogs for quarters."...and she said "Hey, my whole system is Jensen!". Oh well. Well I hate to inform you of this, but there are 2 models of Jensen subs that will be a bit louder than your XLC's. As far as audiovox and ****..that's just retarded. But as far as subs go. Brand name doesn't always mean much much. Ever heard of Resonant Engineering or Beyond Audio.. what about Adire?.. All Awesome subs most people don't know. Then there's RF Punch RFZ's.. CRAP ..as far as a system being better cause it's louder..that's just funny. Subs are the least important part of a sound system......How you position the subs is about 40% of how loud your system will be. And it can also affect the sound.

Umm...okay...about the Jensens...they may be louder, but are they as accurate and deep as my XLCs? Also, as far as the brand name, I didn't exactly mean it that way. I meant, certain brands, mostly. Like if you were to compare RF or Kicker to, I dunno, maybe JB Audio...yes, it does exist, and they are the crappiest subs I have ever heard in my life. The bass sounds kinda like someone tapping on the lid of an empty coffee can...really hollow sounding. Have you ever heard of Volfenhag? I heard some a while back, and they sound awesome...so I know what you mean about brands that aren't well known. Anyway, about subs being the least important part of a sound system...I have to agree with you. I mean, I have heard some insanely loud systems at my school, but most of them have terrible distortion or the bass is really "boomy". I have Infinity Reference all around (3 1/2's up front, 6x9's in back) with bass-blockers on the 3 1/2's. I have zero distortion. Also, my Panasonic HU has Super High Definition Bass, so the mids and highs are incredibly clear and well-pronounced, and the bass is tight and punchy. Also, what is actually the best way to position subs? I didn't quite understand the post from a few days ago about sub positioning. From what I read, it sounded like the best sound came from the subs facing the back of the car, and as close to the trunk as possible. Is that right? I've had friends tell me I should turn my subs around so I can see 'em when my trunk is open, but I don't want to unless my sound will benefit from it.

For Positioning your subs go the thread at the top of the screen says "where to aim your subs " .The Jensen subs with nickle or aluminum plated cones are more accurate than XLC's . XLC's are decent subs. But they aren't top of line in any sense. The Volfenhag subs I've heard those. They're actually common subs in europe. But the sound of a sub (under the assumption that it's a good quality build)depends mostly on the enclosure. Some subs will perform better if they're made better. Magnet structure cone material.. yadda yadda.

Umm...so in other words, for best SPL, all the way back and facing back...for better sq, all the way forward facing forward? I dunno...doesn't really matter, in order to face my subs backwards, I'd have to unmount my amp and capacitor from my box and reposition them due to the cables being cut just the right lenght for their current positions...and I'm too lazy for that. I know my XLCs aren't top of the line...but I traded my two 10" MTX Road Thunders (I paid $100) even for my two 12" RF XLCs in a sealed box.
I'm not complaining...I am gonna get some better subs, though. I am going to get two 12" Kicker Solobaric L7s. They put out insane SPLs, and in a sealed box, are accurate enough for my tastes. I usually listen to rap, so tight bass isn't completely important. I don't think I'll notice much of a difference between my XLCs and the Solobarics...of course since the Solobarics are newer, they may actually be more accurate. I dunno. uh... i dont know about the XLC's but L7's bump 700 RMS.
ey mohawk, are punch hx2's any good? ike sound has them for 140 a peice... n i think they could push 500 RMS(magnet looks pretty big too).

RF subs are all more than decent. FOr their relative classes of subs, from Entry level to top of the line. L7's sealed depending ont he enclosure size can sound great and bump plenty good. However using smaller sealed enclosures may not get you the SPL you want. However ported and tuned to 35Hz. . You'll get plenty of sweet sound and some serious bump.

"my god, you should've seen how far his cones move!" - some kid in school telling his friends, after looking at my subs hit

I can't wait to get my Power HX2 12". gonna be a couple months. I went back to my original plan and I am getting my system before I do any external mods. wheels and tires will be first after stereo though.

Update:
I turned my subs around after all. My neon license plate frame arrived today, and in order to wire it to my brake lights, I had to drill a hole in my trunk floor (in my Sunbird)...which required me to take out my subs and lift my carpet up. Overall, I am pretty happy with the results. I haven't noticed any change in sound quality at all, and it seems quite a bit louder inside and outside the car. I prefer to keep my sound in, but seeing the looks on the faces of the people I pass...priceless. I had people in cars in front of and next to me with their windows up, and they were looking back at me with their mouths hanging open. Not bad for XLCs, huh? Also, when I cruised throught the "backlot", the parking lot of our old and unused train depot (the local hangout), people would just stare at me as I went by. I just can't figure out if it was my subs, my red neons, or my strobes. Btw, just so nobody tells me that strobes are illegal for on-road use, I already know. I only turn 'em on when I'm parked and when I'm going through the backlot.

v of id... What Rockford subs?..
Brand name and model are different things. If you're running power HX2's. you'll be louder. If you're running XLC's or even Punch He's the Jenses would have you. You'd be amazed at the numbers some subs can hit in the right setup. A pair of 8's in a local guys MX-3 with 400 watts is hitting over 140DB's off the dash. I once had a pair of 15's with 800Wrms to them and couldn't break 140 in a Chevy Caprice. I see alot of people with a treo of 10w3's who can't break 135.. setup and tuning has ALOT to do with it.... Our civics are not good SPL cars. they aren't bad. But aren't great either...

<< Well then you probally already know that the neon license plate frame is also illegal. Unless it is up front. Nothing but a white light should be present on the rear! >>
Riiigggghhhhtttt....well, you see...I have mine wired up so that it only comes on with my brakes...and it's red, so I am basically using it as an auxillary brake light. Also, wtf do you mean "nothing but white light should be present on the rear"? If that's true, then you better be clearin' your f*ckin' brake lights, buddy.
Oh yeah, and just in case I read that wrong, and you meant the license plate light...mine never worked to begin with...and cops around here never said anything before or after I installed the license plate frame.
Yeah, I meant the license plate can only have a white light. Most cops usually don't screw with you about that stuff anyways. But if the didn't get their free coffee from McDonalds or their donut brake, watch out. They'll stop you for something else and go" oh yeah did you know". So that is all I meant.
