Solder 16-8 gauge wire

How would I go about soldering 12-8 gauge wire. My 30Watt soldering Iron works fine for 16-22 gauge, but the thicker cables it can't heat up enough. Do I need like a 100Watt soldering iron?

did you try paste? if that doesn't work, yeah you'd need a bigger soldering gun. it is more difficult to solder large wires cause you can't completly heat the whole wire at a time.

or you can do like factorys do .. heat up a portion of solder in something that can handle the heat and dip the wire into it

why are you trying to solder 8 gauge? There is really no good way to do that. Or any reason to do that either.

yeah soldering flux. what is it for? is it for tapping that wire off of the 8 gauge? if you just want to connect them together, put the wires together and put a clamping connecter to hold them together.

For wire that size, wires are typically just crimped with connectors. A good crimp connection is just as good, airtight and strong.

I use a propane torch for anything bigger than 12 gauge. I've used it on 4 gauge and 2 guage plenty of times with success.

What I would do is heat up the wire in the flame and melt the solder into the wire strands. Do that for both ends. Now you put both soldered ends over the flame and it'll create the connection. Good luck!
