Surveillance camera in car?
Surveillance camera in car?
Does anyone know or has tried setting up a surveillance camera in their car. I need to know if its possible to power one and record everything on a vcr. Is this possible?
Most of the surveillance cameras I've been looking at require a plug or battery, I was looking at this write up about how you can buy this product that will allow you to have a plug outlet, using the car battery.

How would I get these cameras to work?

This is a motion camera that takes pictures. But a little pricey.

I'm thinking I could put a vcr in my trunk and connect a camera right to it. I don't know if that's even possible. So to all the electronics experts please help me out.

yer better off getting one that has a base not in yer car.. cuz if they take yer car.. then they get the video as well..
check out a local surveillance store.. i did some lookin a while and theres TONS of stuff.. i found real basic systems starting at like $150.. and really fancy systems well into the thousands
also summer heat and winter cold will kill a vcr.. the only way to go is digital

i don't really understand how the cameras work, how are they powered, battery? because the ones ive been looking at have to be plugged in, anyone know the best way to power one by plugging it into a car(plug outlet)?

well if someone keyed your car how is a camera gunna help this? where you gunna put it that it could see every angle of you car and the person doing the act. now if it got keyed at say your house, then put a camera outside your house and park in front of it, there is no possible way to have one camera somewhere in your car that is gunna be able to see your whole car and someone doing something it. its not possible

A friend of mine put miniature cameras in his car to catch a video of him going through an autocross track, so yes, it is possible. The cameras were small enough to fit on the back of his rearview mirror and not be seen easily. The only problem was wires... he had to resort to using small strips of tape that matched the color of his exterior. He had the cameras set up using a regular old VCR he had in the back. Tape came out pretty good... for using an old VCR that was sitting around collecting dust, and a few mini vid cameras he got from Fry's Electronics.
I'd say if you were more worried about something happening to your car, if it happened at your house, put up a security camera on your roof to catch the whole driveway. If it was away from home, try and park in an area where you know your car will be on camera. Then if someone messes with it, contact the security office and see if you can view the tape. If it's a place w/o cameras... park up close to the entrance of the business where lots of people will notice if your car is being F'ed with.

It's a nice idea and it's certainly possible, but I don't think it's a practical idea. The odds of catching somebody on tape and then finding that person are very very slim, unless its somebody you know. The police might be able to ID the person, but don't count on it. Invest in a good 2-way alarm instead and you will probably get a better value.
thanks guys for the advice, heres some more details...
I have a 2-way pager alarm, but anyone who has one knows that they won't go off from somebody scratching or touching your car unless you have it on extremely extremely sensitive. Before, my alarm would go off every 2 seconds from people driving by with there fart can mufflers, so I adjusted the sensitivity a bit.
Theres no problem with parking at my house, since I park in the garage and its pretty safe in there. Nothing has ever happened to it in there.
My problem is... when I stay at my girlfriends house(quite often lol). I have to park on the street, and its not directly in front of her house. I can't see my car from looking out her window. Nothing has happened where Ive been parking it. It seemed like a pretty safe place to park. But just the other night, as you know someone keyed it pretty bad. It shows alot on a black car and really pissed the **** out of me.
*** I figure the only way I could catch the person next time(hopefully it wont happen again) is by putting a camera or cameras in my car. I just need to figure out how to set them up. I probably need one of those night vision ones since the keying happened at night and the people who did it are too ***** to do it during the day. Otherwise I'll just have to camp out in my car... with a bat.
