i have a question about a car computer. how would you turn it on and off? would it automatically turn on and off when you turn on and off the ignition? or would you have to manually turn them on and off?

just run wires to the fron and mount them in the blanks buy the lighter... this way it doesnt **** up the pc. if you got win 2k or xp on the box and you hit the power button it will shut down properly. this is what pushed me away from the carputer, im always in a rush, so waiting for it to powerdown all the time is not for me. then i cant hear music til the computer boots back up... so its not for me...
i love the idea of a carputer but since im only in my car alone mostly its really no use, plus even with just a screen and a ps2 or dvd player, why spend so much money on my car if ill never really use it?
sorry for posting something so worthless but is anyone else thinking this way cus ive always wanted a molded screen in the dash but am now doubting it

If you are worried about powering such a device, they sell things to take care of the problem. For instance, you can get an add-on shutdown controller or a PSU that comes with a shutdown controller and be able to just turn off the car. Also there are voltage regulators that keep voltage steady and survive the spike from engine cranking. There are products out there that are geared toward seamless installation of a pc into a car, you just gotta do the research and spend the money. For $150 you can get a PSU by Opus Solutions wich is 150 watt and will do everything you need to do power wise to have a PC.
I spent 1425 points to do this.

frodoplayer is a popular front end at mp3car.com
yeah, a shutdown controller will run you $50-$100.
has anyone made their own using relays? id like to make my own. im most worried about getting the computer to shutdown when i leave the car, and then have the inverter shut off after that.

This sounds intresting... If I was going to do this, I would get rid of my head unit, only have a screen and keep the pc in my car. Wireless connection from my router in my house to my car to dl mp3's... it would rock.
What would I need to set something like this up? I'm good with computers and wiring so thats not a problem. I got a gamecube portible monitor I can maybe hack up and use. I wish I was good with fiberglass so I can do something with it.
Also, sorry about the thread jacking.

Am I the only person that has thought of using a broken laptop off of ebay?
Find a good deal on one with a cracked LCD?
Set it up to hibernate after two minutes of no keyed power. Hop back in the car and set it up to wake up with keyed power. Or push a wake up button?
I've talked with people about carputers on a few different boards, it seems no one has thought of this to solve power issues. A good laptop with a good battery should be able to hibernate for quite some time...
I dont think we'll end up with one in this civic, I dont like the issues you run into with radio and such. I'm wanting one for the Titan, the factory radio has an AUX in and I'm going to mount her were the OEM nav. screen would have been. It is seperate from the radio alltogether...
Nice jobs btw, I cant wait to get one put in my truck...
