is 100sq feet neccessary?
well i just cant stand all this rattling im gettiong from the back so ive decided to get some fatman sound deadening. and saw on ebay(after reading and searching on DIY sound deadening and wat not here on the boards) 100sq feet of fatman mat. i would be doing some of my front doors to but the main place where all the rattling is coming from is the rear deck, and the trunk lid..and some of the front door panels. so you think this would be too much for wat im gonna buy and too little? sorry i cant measure my trunk and evrything else right now cuz im stuck here in class at school(college buisness communications class)
100sq ft is alot. I did the full floor, front doors, full trunk, the sides, and some of the firewall, and i have some left over. unless you want to do more than one layer, i would say you dont need 100sqft

As far as your original question, 100sqft is a little much if you are not doing the floors...BUT DO THE FLOORS!
You will notice considerably less road noise while on the highway, since your engine's and tires' noise will be muffled as it richochet's off of the cement on the road (asphalt is not a noise problem)
Also, it's really easy-since you will have the side panels off anyway, why not take up the seats and carpet?
Finally, either way, use more than one layer. Most of us sound deadening deciples use AT LEAST two layers, especially on the problem areas (wheel wells, doors).

ok to very mildy hijack for one second......sound deadening is my next mod planned too............if you do the usual amount of sound deadening, do you get a completely rattle free car? or am I dreaming....lol
YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH SOUND DAMPENING MATERIALS!
I would say 100sq ft is perfect, and I would suggest to put 2 layers on your doors, and 2 layers on your rear deck. The rest, use it for floors, trunk lid, etc...

Hurts, you'll never rid yourself of rattle, expecially in the rattle traps out cars are... You'll be able to do lots of justice with that much though.
To the thread starter, I used 100 sq ft from my rear seats back. I double layered the trunk. Noticed a difference. I also used another 100 from there forward, along with adding carpet padding under the existing carpet. The rear deck is notorious for rattle. Make sure you put 2 good layers on top it it (between the plastic and the metal. Heck, for good measure I'd glue some type of fabric up there (I uses industrial carpet because it's thin. You could even use fleece. Spray glue on top of the mat deadener and then stuck it on. I've seen people carpet the rear deck (I believe Rabbit did this). keep it frmo contacting the metal and vibrating against the rear window and you'll elimintate a lot of the rattle there.

Actually, if you sound deaden your car...you will hear MORE noise! (initially)
Your engine will quiet a little
Your road noise will drop in pitch
Your cabin reference acoustics will quiet and you'll hear little noises you didn't realize were there.
That being said, with some work, you can kill any little squeaks and clicks you will hear.
If you pad your plastic panels properly, they will push against the sidewalls and metal and stay in place better, rather than move around.
