how much power can stock 6.5s take?
If u have a aftermarket HU (a good one) that should be fine. Personally if u get some nice speakers from ebay DIY install is simple for HU and Speaker swap. And from personal xperience HU + @ftermarket speakers + installation = cleaner, more crisp sound and even MP3 capablilty/remote. Check my profile.

i just received a new KX1200.1 that came from a Kicker-sponsored vehicle (cranked out 1610 watts on the most recent bench-test), and to make sure it worked when the FedEx dude dropped it off, i hooked it up to the power and signal cables in my truck and ran some 16 gauge wire to the 4 stock 6.5"s from my 2003 Civic EX (check the pic below if you want to try this yourself
)...anyway, with the help of Bass Mekanik V. 5.0 (awesome CD, by the way) i was able to invert 4 cones within about 3 seconds
...it said "15 watts" on each magnet, and i gave them each 27 TIMES MORE THAN THAT...anyway, it was cool to watch...i got like 3" of excursion out of some paper cones and foam surrounds
...
on another note, if you're eBay'ing it, check out the Kicker KX60s...they'll need .75" spacers to fit in your doors, but they'll get LOUD and have awesome clarity...

I got my component amp before i got my components and ran the stock 6.5's on the amp for about 6months. I used 150W per channel, and had no problem. However I had the gains down to probably 75W per channel and it got plenty loud.

My stock speakers were taken out of my civic within 48 hours of leaving the lot....they have been under my bed ever since.... awaiting the day that i sell my car where they will be put back in.....in two years anyone want an 02 vic with a hundred thousand miles in it with BRAND NEW SPEAKERS? I should get atleast a few hundred dollars more trade in value if my car has brand new speakers in it right?
FRom my experience with stock speakers...they will ususally handle the power from an aftermarket deck for a while...but they will break down and wear out much faster than aftermarket speakers would...The simply aren't made to last like your typical aftermarket speakers are. Ultimately you are better off investing in a better set of speakers, save your stock for when you sell your car. If you amp the stock speakers they'll probably last under a yr at moderate volumes. If you just power them off an aftermarket HU and don't play them too lloud you may get them to last longer.
