Advice on setting up my trunk.
Advice on setting up my trunk.
Ok, so, I'm walling off my trunk for aesthetics. I can't decide between two methods. Please comment, provide your reasoning and not just a flat opinion.
The floor is done, it just needs to be carpeted. I have trouble there. I am going to put a wall up and seal it to the back of the box, then put the woofers through so that only the woofers are visible. What I can't decide is; should I flush the wall up against the side

OR, should I just keep straight edges like so.

My biggest concern is simply how the bass will respond. I don't wanna seal my bass completely off from the cabin, so I'll leave a gap between the top of the wall and the roof of the trunk. But do you think I'd benefit from leaving the sides too. It'd be easier to leave the sides flat, but look a little better if I flushed it. I don't think it would look bad with the flat sides though.

My bloated opinion *hehe its not flat!* is seal off the sides AND top, toss in the subs and put in actual portholes *you can get the ones for boxes off ebay if you look every now and then, but I would put 2 or 3 down the center. The reason being is leaving the top open is gonna leave the sound sounding a little sloppier because where the air is coming from won't really be "controlled".

i know a guy whos done work on some cars that are worth 300,000 dollars and up (all on sound system) for db races. he also does tons of smaller jobs for people who can afford him. he said its best to aim it straight at the deck lid because the soudn will bounce off and amplify bouncing back into the cabin. as for the setup....its odd but im actually in the process of doing the exact same thing. im going to build a box put subs then mount a "wall" like you have and put a plexi grille on the subs. then on the other side im mounting the amp behind seats on box and sealing off that opening with a wall. (cut out for amp).
if the walls do block sound im screwed lol. post up finished pics though.

i didn't see if anyone covered it, but beware that if you want to keep it flush with the sides, you may need to cut holes for the trunk supports, unless you want to drive around with your trunk open
i like to keep things clean, so i like the first one better. just gotta make room for when the trunk is closed

Personally, were it me, and I really wanted to "do a wall type effect", I'd probably go with the second. Actually, I'd much rather do an IB setup, and seal everything off, but I don't know your woofers, so I can't say how well it'd respond to that type of enclosure. For aesthetic purposes, I like the second method. Keep everything flush all around as opposed to having that small, useless gap. If all else fails, you could always do the box, but cut one of the boards to fit the contours, cut it out and plexi the opening and add some neon or something likethat to spice the appearance up some.
OH, I defintiely realize flush is better for aesthetics. I'm wondering if it will affect the sound to seal the woofers off from the trunk. I know about bass waves and how they won't be blocked, but will it affect the sound at all?
