Exclamation plastic on front doors and goopy grey stuff

Hi, I'm going to dampen my doors when I install my new speakers. I know there is some plastic stuck to the doors with some goopy grey stuff. Once I pull the plastic off how do I get rid of the goopy/sticky grey stuff that remains on the door?

I pulled mine off slowly by hand when I did my panels and used a knife and putty knife to scrap the rest. Of course I did it all carefully

AH, one of my little install tricks to the rescue.
Heat it up with a hair dryer, then lay srips of duct tape over it and pull it up slowly. Then use a solvent on the last remaining bit.

I just left it there (the goop, not the plastic)...more mass = more deadening, and its super sticky so it's not gonna cause an adhesion issue for the deadener.

thanks for the info. I think I'll try the duct tape idea. Will rubbing alchol work as a solvent? or do I need goo gone or something similar?

The duct tape took so much of it off for me, I used hot water and windex to get the rest off. Goo Gone will work best though.

I dont think that is a risk to take no matter how careful you are. My friend now has 3 scratches on his car because he used a knife.

What I have found to work best so that you don't have to waste the money for such things as goof off is just using the Isopropenal aka rubbing alcohol especially the higher concentrates like 92% but 70% works just fine. Just dab some of the alcohol on the double sided tape(the grey stuff) and let it sit. Then get a paper towel with some more rubbing alcohol on it and start rubbing. It should all come off. It took me some time to get mine off because I used 70% but it was better that trying to scrap it off. Can't even tell it was there!

considering its behind the door panel a small scratch would not be an issue to me. However the approach that I did to get it off was what I did not what has to be done. I don't have any major scratches and what I do have is behind the panel. Windex and goo gone do work rather well but I did not remove it all totally just like stated in a post above because it helps in adhesion to the dampening material used.

Ok, but the duct tape works in 2 moinutes, no waiting, no slow tedious work, etc.

I've been considering doing this myself when I install my power windows, I just put power door locks in a few weeks ago(I have an '05 VP) and that **** got everywhere. I'd love to just pull the plastic off completely and replace it with some sound deadener, but I am worried about leaks? Is that a concern with that?

You can also use car oil... that is a natural solvent.. you just have to use somwething like KABOOM cleaner afterwards right away so the gas doesnt leave a worn look.

J187, I uses the duct tape method on the passenger door last night. It worked awesome! At first I used a heat gun in conjunction with the duct tape but then found the duct tape on its own worked just fine. Thanks for the great tip.

On a side note I got about half way through appling the deadening material to that door. I'll prolly continue tonight.

Thanks again.

Right on bro. Actually, I think I only used the heat gun because I had it right there, as I was finishing up some old-school dynamat - the kind that needed the heat gun.

I would NOT be removing that if I were you.....that works as a vapour barrier to protec the inside of your car from water and mildew....

as far as i know you should be leaving it on....

It's fine to remove it. The dynamat will block more than that will plus you can just put it back if you want to afterward. No big deal
