How does the SPL compare to sealed?
Use of a subsonic Filter?

I have a ported banpass box made by JL for a 10' w0 and it pounds better than my buddy that has 2 10 w3's and I have less of a current draw due to needing just a 300s amp
realy pissed him off too since I spent like $300 less on my setup lol

Nice setup, I am building these boxes from Diamond Audio specs, I will post pics once I finish. I would post now, but the prefab sealed box is kinda embarassing, plus the amps are just kinda ho-hum mounted on either side.

I built a similar box for my 15". My box has a slot port just like that diagram "L" shaped but does not have the other two pieces in the interior of the box, it sounds great! Low and deep!

no prob, sounds nice though, I have heard that that type of setup realy pushes the sound out of whatever type of sub you put in it. The buddy I mentioned above was actualy planning on getting a custom box w/ a JL 8w3 that is supposidly just as loud as a 12s setup... supposidly... I just know that my setup is louder than a 2 sub setup which has been proven actualy a couple of times, since I had this system in my last car as well, lookin forward to the pics, sound awsome! Good luck on the fab!

How do you know it's louder? Have you put it on a meter? Are the car's identical cars? Tere are a lot of factors. If it sounds louder, that may not be the case, it may just be the car size.
And CplJohn, I have a box of that type, it's not really a snail shell enclosure though. Regardless, the Ssuib I have was built specific for that type of enclosure, and the enclosure was made by the company and shipped to me to assemble. It pounded sure (SPL wise). Any speaker I put it it sounded decent, but the one that was made specific for that type of enclosure sounded best in it. I've since moved on.

that's not just a standard ported box, that's a labrynth enclosure. When done right they have the possibilty of being awesome boxes.. you have to build it to the EXACT specs that the manufacturer gives you if diamond is giving you specs.

yep heres another page for it:

I remember reading about that type of enclosure years ago And the article stated that if built properly and I mean with woofer and enclosure together properly it's sopposed to be able to produce the highest possible spl, but the article explains that they are hard to build. I had a pair of 15"s from the old masonic temple and there were definitly a different type of bass, real extended but smooth.

Thanks everyone, this is good stuff, I will be priming and painting the box today, I'll get some pics when I am done. I am also putting together a DIY with my second box. Ex 03 your right, this box has been ridiculously hard to build, but it can be done.

The specs that I have are specifically for Diamond Audio subs, either go ebay, or get on diamonds website for a list of dealers in your area. I'm from Dallas and there are only 6 or 7 in the metroplex that are authorized to sell diamond. Its not so much that the box is hard to build, but that it does have to be right at spec and it is very time consuming to do it right. Keep in mind that Diamond recommends when running a sub in these boxes you "should" have a subsonic filter either built into your amp or in an external crossover. The box is tuned to 30Hz, so the filter will keep your subs from going below 30. Without one there is a chance of over-excursion which would end your subwoofers life. I won't have my subs in them until both boxes are completely finished, but from what everyone has been saying, it has the pressure of a sealed enclosure and the spl of a ported. I can't wait to start setting off car alarms.

CPLJohn. Might I suggest an off kilter covering for this box, as the company that used to specialize in this application, as well as a local dealer that specializes in designing them for manufacturer's subs (they built one for a JL W7 and it was phenomenal, pricey as hell, but wow!). Both of them suggest to cover it with a spray in bed liner. They recommend Line-X or Rhino linings (or having it profesionally sprayed). I Rhino Lined mine because a friend owned the Rhino Linings dealership here at the time. Line-X charges about $50 to spray it.

Thats a damn good idea, that never really crossed my mind. They have a Rhino Lining place not too far from my place,--I already have the primer and paint though. I'll do what any respective money waster will do, I'll prime and paint them, and if it sucks then i'll rhino line it, and if that is not tasteful, I will paint the rhino lining---Gosh, sometimes its so hard being a mensa. Lol. Sigh. Sob.

That's how my box is built. But instead of porting out the side, it ports towards the rear of the car. You can see a pic of it in my member's ride gallery. I'm running a 10W7 with a 500.1 powering it and I think it sounds amazing. It can be loud when I want it to, but it never stops being perfectly clear and balanced. How much of that is the equip and how much is the box, I don't know, but I like it.
