Also...

I want too be able to play my music a little louder.. It seems that when I reach a volume of 20, the speakers crackle a little.

What type of music you listen to mostly? How much you want to spend? What do you have currently?

So, what are you running now? Get a new HU, some components or coaxials for the front, then a small amp to power them.

How much are you spending? Wow, for a Mod, you're really unhelpful

for trance, 10" size, a little more output, nothing crazy (except the fact its a 10" playing ) and clean trance sound, I would check out the 10" HCCA, pre-H2 model. its got a red basket and a black plastic dustcap that takes up 90% of the cone area. there are the letters "orion" embossed and colored red on that dust cap. you cant miss the style if you look for these indicators (there are about four designs floating around now)

the only thing is they are really rare. expect $150-$200 used on ebay if you can find one, retail is $500 at a shop, but im sure you could talk a shop down to $250 or $200 if they happen to have one sitting in the back as "unsellable merchandise."

you would need 600 rms at 4 or 1 ohm (its a 2 ohm DVC woofer) and you WILL need to make your own box, the hcca can be ported only, about 1.4 cues tuned to 42ish or so does nicely.

you can expect output to be about on par with a single tempest in 4 cubes sealed with 500 rms.

The model you are looking for is the HCCA 10D. I have one and it is simple amazing. Like WR said, it is rated at 600 rms, but I push it over 900 rms through a HCCA 250r.

There is two HCCA 12Ds on ebay right now... no 10"s though.

its all power compression after 600 rms, but thats what I love about the woofer.

I got a buddy who likes ot blow things up. When he tires of stuff, he gives it to his little brothers, who have even less respect for stuff. made a 15" comp VR look like a meteor crash site.

the three of them own a 10" hcca and a jbl 1200.1.

both still work.

if that isnt a testament to how overbuilt these woofers are, I dont know what is!

I have 2 G&S designs 10" speakers. They arent extremely loud, but they are perfect for me. I listen to all types of music, but mostly rap. The words are just a little louder than the bass at high volumes. The bass will still be heard from about 30 feet away. I have pioneer speakers/HU as well. nobody has really ever heard of G&S designs, but they respond to bass very very well (after adjusting settings forever), and are very clean, IMO.

if you dont mind a 12, the 12D needs 2.3 cubes rather than 1.4. so youd have to give up almost twice as much space just to up your size from 10 to a 12. but you would up your volume capability, too.

technically, a single 12" hcca can win you competitions in an SPL oriented box and 600 rms, reasonably easily. In a music oriented box (2.3 cubes tuned to I dont remember what, I think 38ish) it wont hit quite so loud, but youll get all the volume you'd need from 35ish to as high as you need, plus audible response rolling off far below.

but it does take up twice as much space.....

This my only qualm about the subwoofer. It takes up a lot of space just for a 10. Sorry to jack the thread, but WR, would you know of a comparable subwoofer that can be used in a sealed application?

audiomobile mass. good luck finding one!

ID MAX 10". teeny space, same power handling, not the same kind of output, but a much much better transient response. looking at an SQ competition subwoofer now rather than potential spl.

for the value woofer idq10. cheaper than the max, 300 watt powerhandling, so with 600 rms you could power two, and two sealed would only take up a touch more space than one hcca10. also two would probbaly only be a touch more expensive than a single max10, and certainly the most common woofer to be had of all three here.

Nice. Got the same HU. BTW, for front speakers, I would suggest going for Polk Db 6 1/2 components. Probably the best ICE mod I've ever done to my car. Got them for 80 bucks brand new because I work at C.C. They sound better than the Infinity Comps. I've had those, and I like the Polks much more.

You cant go wrong with anything from Elemental Designs. Check out their subs, a nice compliment between SQ and SPL, but its geared more towards SQ heads. I have one 10" in a sealed box and love it.
