Makes sense. Think about the part that gets hot, typically people call the positive the hot lead.

Or think about it this way... If the sides were positive, you could very easily electrocute yourself by accidentally touching the edges of the socket if your other hand was touching ground. For example, your window frame.

THAT would be smart.

Hence, the "hot" lead is buried. You'd have to stick your whole finger in there.

^^^Uhm I dont think so...That'd be like touching the positive and negative battery terminals at the same time. You dont get electrocuted then.

I would tend to disagree with you there, chief.

Bust open the plug and you will see the two wires, one actually goes into the plug and the other is clamped or soldered onto the rim of the plug, the one that is soldered on the rim is the negative and the other is positive

You can't get electricuted with 12 volts, you need 24 volts or more to start feeling a sensation of shock. If you don't know anything about electricity, don't post wrong answers.

fyi, I touched the neon circuitboard and got shocked. Not enough to die but enough to feel it pretty good. And I can feel 9v battery too.

Neons have a tranformer to up the voltage, that's why you got shocked, they do not run on 12volts. As for the 9 volt battery, it only shocks you on your tongue because it's a wet location and more current passes through you, you do not get shocked by touching the 9 volt battery with your fingers.

Because I'm stupid, I once accidentally grabbed one of the strobes in my trunk when it was turned on. **** I could almost see God.

But gearbox, the positive would be the lead that is closest to the middle of the socket. Ground is the outside, power is on the inside, which is the pin, so the power wire would be the one closest to the pin, ground closest to the outside
