relocation for head unit
does anyone make a relocation kit so that the head unit would fit under the dash where the cigarette lighter goes?? i know someone has done it before but when i put my hu down there it sticks out a little.

Another option it to put it on a vertical axis in the pocket in teh center console (beside the e-brake). Both pieces would be a custom piece you'd have to make, or have made. For the right price, I could make you either.

sheeeeeit.. for the right price i could birth yer children
]hehhe... hmmm... come to think of it.. that sounds pretty damn cool.. wish i was more into audio stuff..
in the lower dash you lose your cup holders.
in the center console you have poor ergonomics.
Im not saying either of those are bad, but I put my radio back up high after those locations due to problems. dont use the cupholders for more than a can of soda? you are totally cool. can you navigate your radio entirely by touch alone? you're cool again. but I like my cupholders, and competition forbade my use of the center console, so up high it has to go for me personally.
good luck on finding a location or method of install, and if you find a new spot thats even better than all the above, lemme know!

well if youve seen my other posts i have the 5.8 in dash. since no one wants to buy it im think of relocting it down there so i dont mess it up with the ac. then i was going to relocate the ac controls down to where the cubby hole is next to the ebrake. and since on one has done it i was going to put guages in the old ac holes and have the stock hu location house my safc and other boost controlers and such. i just started to heavily mod my car. i will post pics if i decide to do something. oh as for for priceing how much were you looking to charge for the reloction kit???

You could always go in the glove box. Course you could make an overhead console and put it up there as well. Time intensive yes, but it'd be freaking sweet.
Wished there were some salvage yards around here that actually had 7th gens in them. I got a flatbed to put it on, I just want to find a full interior, blood or not, to put in my yard to make my stuff in, so I don't have to tear my car apart and have it like that for a few days to glass stuff at a more rapid pace than I'd like.

I really resent the dash setup on the 7th. Why the hell couldn't they have just left us a little more room in the center cluster. Triple din is all I ask for. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a solution. I wonder if it's possible to glass the headunit to the bottom of the dash, up at an angle, and stay clear of cupholders.

again the same issue with ergonomics, but i figure you can locate teh faceplate separate form teh body, letting you put the body in the center console and the face in the cig lighter area. kinda best of both worlds style.
assuming no ergonomic issues. beats the cupholder part though.

What? what do you mean you can seperate the faceplate? do you mean actually putting just the little 1/2 in face plate somewhere and put the big radio somewhere else? how would you do that? could i put my radio in my trunk and put my faceplate somehwerew like on my dash?

go to partsexpress.com, you can buy underdash ABS plastic mounting kits....so take one of those, put the stereo in, cut a hole in the headliner, mount it to the headliner, run the wires through the hole, blammo, all done.

Hmm, just got my 9833 in and realized that its a hell of a lot shorter than my old HU. I did a dry fit and found that I can get the 9833 to fit within about 2.5 inches of the cig lighter bezel. If I removed that metal brace behind there, I think I can get it to within 1 inch. That's totally acceptable. I'd glass it in real tight and keep my cupholders. I think I might be giving it a shot in leu of actaully trying to mount the HU and Face seperately (that still leaves the problem of putting CDs in)
grab your soldering iron, I hear cat5 wire works really well for this. youll need to juryrig the radio to play with the face off, not to hard to just trip a catch
the radio doesnt know the face is off, so there are no performance issues, only reliability issues if you do a poor soldering job!
not too difficult theoretically, but dont let me fool you inot thinking ive done this myself. check out an audio forum if you reallyh want apriori knowledge before doing it, but the theory is pretty simple, and sound.

Complete housing to mount a DIN-sized radio anywhere you wish. They also have a bracket if you already have a way to support the back, but IMO, this is the best option.

Only one down side to the under-dash housing...if you use it overhead (Like I probably will), you'll have to run some pretty long extensions for the wire harness, and you'll also probably need an antenna extension. But if you've got the extra wire and you know what you're doing, it'd be no problem to have the power wires up the driver's a-pillar and the speaker wires/RCAs down the passenger side...run them under the headliner and you're set.

if you use it overhead
running it all the way across the dash, up the pillars, you'd probably end up adding 6-8 feet per side, plus the antenna extension, could be messy.

You're talking about moving the main unit low, and locating the faceplate high? I see where you're talking about there, but why would you want a faceplate less unit in plain view? I'd much rather have it hidden, or partially hidden.
take a look at the housing, its a universal housing, that bolts to the underside of..... something. anything. houses the whole unit, no relocation of anything.
he says he plans to bolt it to his ceiling, 18 wheel truck style, to house his radio.
and the disadvantage he suggests, is that by moving the body of the radio up high like that, he will either need to string up 11 wires for power, ground, remote, and four speaker outputs, or will have to string up three wires for power ground, remote, and all his RCA cabling for amplifiers, which could number as many as three pair of RCA cable.
not to mention FM antenna cable.
I think that is what he is referring to.
and to you, evilone, I say good luck, my prediction is youll have a hell of a time with the aesthetics of that housing, looks huge! got my best wishes, I dont know how id do it in your place.

anywyas, I think the plastic piece you are looking for cna be found here
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=265-669
if youve got the pocket in your civic, you can use kit
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=265-668
and I think its part number 7897 or something, 7987 thats for double din units, which you can combine with the universal CD pocket if you want to swap cd pocket with radio.

unless, tang, you are referring to a plastic piece that will allow you to mount your radio in the cig lighter area, in which case, it doesnt exist, thus why you couldnt find it.
there have been many people here to ubild one from scratch from fiberglass, you can find many threads about it, everyone chose their own methods of construction unique to all others.
also check out www.mp3car.com, which has many peole there who's fiberglass knowledge is specialized to dash housings and pieces, rather than entire car interiors. They would be able to give wonderful advice too as to how to build such pieces.

www.the12volt.com also has a list of all of the metra dash kits, in case that's not the one you want. Should be a selectable tab on the left that has 2004 metra guide as it's title.
